Need some help guys! My Zed (JDM TT) was driving beautifully until yesterday. At lunch when I drove down to the local shops I noticed a whine from the trans on medium acceleration.....just a whine but no slipping or flaring. Then in the evening on the way home it started to flare a bit and again the whine.....then it went away. Checked trans fluid level when i got home and it was fine.
This morning on start-up there was a whine which went away once the engine settled down on idle. Drove for about 5 or 6 Ks and it started to flare badly. I then lost all drive and had to pull over. Turned the engine off, left it for 5 or 10 seconds, started it again and it drove fine for about a K; then flaring again and lost drive. Had to turn around and come home stopping every 1 or 2 Ks to do the stop/start routine but managed to get the car home. When I parked it and pulled the Transmission dip stick out the oil was slightly burnt looking and smoking hot.

Any ideas........dead transmission or is it an electronic issue? As I said at the start, the car was driving beautifully until yesterday lunch time, pulling like a train and no slip.

My trans went last Xmas, $750 + $1100 labour to fix to fit a 2nd hand one from Nizpro. Sounds Similar probs to my old one, torque bands went( trans was on the way out when I bought the car) cheaper to fit 2nd hand one, $3500 for a reco.. At the time , I also fitted a large transcooler up the front and bypassed the rad cooler. Unplugged the stepping resistor for a much harder shift (which also saves the clutches due to less slipping time). Now I have a well behaved auto which shifts hard and instantly like a tiptronic with NO flare between gears, ran me a lazy 13.6 at willowbank in may, with just pod, exhaust boost and toshi tune :) No regrets staying auto , haters will say go manual but my auto shifts faster than a manual in a straight line Think of an instant shift from gear to gear thats my box. Auto FTW on the drag strip

Not even going to entertain the idea of a rebuild.....$3000 up here in SW Sydney. At that price i might as well go the manual conversion path. Have met up with Chris from the zcar club and he is going to help me remove and fit a second hand transmission....even letting me use his workshop so he gets a gong for being one of the decent Z owners!
Just concerned the problem might be electronic rather than mechanical considering the transmission was shifting and driving so well before yesterday. I would have thought it would show some signs of failure before letting go so soon like it did.

hi guys, my is a TT with auto trans too. And had exactly the same problem. was driving well and suddenly gear slip and went blank. look under the car and found trans lub splutter on the undercarriage to the exhaust and smoke was everywhere.

currently the trans lub goes thru e radiator, right? do u bypass e radiator completely and goes straight to the trans intercooler? how big is the intercooler?

Planetrobbi i would like to install a transintercooler too. can u share some photos of your setup?

Open question until you have the pan dropped.

You probably need a minimum of bands, filter cleanout + flush and new fluid. You may also need new clutchpacks.

Anywhere from a few hundred dollars to $2k. May as well have a valve body modification done while there.

    Stepping resistor?

Resistor? So is this a mod for the daily drive in traffic? Is there a downside?
Obviously an electronic mod, so I wonder if it could be engaged using a dash mounted switch.

What is that other mod? The sheet aluminium with machined holes. Shift kit?

If you are working on your auto, maybe consider that too.

I had similar issues a few months ago. Under some heavy driving my transmission just didn't want to change gear. I noticed the temp gauge was also high on my cluster when it started happening. Guessing the fluid just became burnt.

Just took it to a transmission specialist and got a full power flush plus change of filter and the transmission felt like new.

I was reading somewhere that the transmission cooling lines can become blocked after 20+ years causing overheating of the transmission. Best to also invest in an aftermarket cooler !

Trans was serviced just over a year ago by me so I can vouch for the work. Speaking to a Trans specialist in Chipping Norton and he says that this is a common problem with Jatco Transmissions where one of the clutch packs goes and the shite from it blocks the filter. Thats the surging I am getting when the car is driving.
Now on start up the whine is there and stays without going away. Going to pull the trans and swap for a second hand unit. Probably good too since I can fit a new rear main seal and finish off my Stainless exhaust by fitting the manifolds, dumps and test pipes. Shame I haven't got the time or money to do a manual conversion. Then again, driving in Syd traffic is probably better in an auto; especially if I trick it up a little!
