Trying to put the timing belt on my vg30 and don't have a crank mark, how can i find the tdc to align it up cheers
Need to remove the crank pulley, lower cam belt cover and there is a mark on the oil pump and lower sprocket.
Black Dot Mine was a black dot on the Timing Belt pulley. Another way to finding TDC is to ; 1. Take the Cam covers off the drivers side of the engine (Exhaust and Intake) 2. make sure spark plugs are out of all cylinders. 3. insert a long thin stick such as a chopstick in cylinder 1 (make sure its long enough to stick right out the top of the engine (i would say 40cm+)) 4. turn the engine over by hand using a long breaker bar and socket. 5. watch the movement of the stick as it moves up and down. Just after the stick reaches the highest point and before it goes down you have TDC on #1. 6. then align the marking on the oil pump case with that of the sprocket (you should see a small notch on the side of the oil pump - located at around 3:30 mark) Assuming here that the timing belt is off spin the cams a little so that they are not engaged they should move backwards and forwards about 10 degrees left and right freely. (i.e. not pushing down on the lifters) so that when you turn the engine the pistons don't hit on the valves.. Another way; If you have not removed the timing belt (look like you have on the picture) - Line all the dots up on the cam gears with that of the backing plate and applying the same principle as that in point 6 you should see the marking on the crank pulley align with that on the oil pump...
That's not accurate enough for my liking. Unless you use a positive stop and a degree wheel. Just do it properly and pull all the crap of the front of the motor. It's not hard.
what crispy said - It is easier... but looking at the pictures- with out the timing belt there I am assuming he has already pulled the harmonic balancer off.
Hmm can't edit original post, can only turn the harmonic balancer / crank shaft 180 degrees and then it hits something
Go and buy a bolt harmonic balancer puller from supercrap. Will be $30 and you will use it a lot if you own a zed Do it properly. Cams at #1TDC will show you nothing. The exact location of the cam will change from engine to engine depending on the deck of the block and heads.
Ouch! Im not liking the sound of this.. Why not setup a BBQ & Coldies for the weekend and have a mini tech day.. Would be safer to have expert advice onsite.
I'm with Chrispy, get all the gear off the front, line up the dots, wack on the belt and away you go. disclaimer: There are some extra bits to do in there...I may have over simplified it
2 ways to work on a VG30. The Right Way or NO WAY.......... Havent got the tools, knowledge or the time? Dont even start to do it.
Maybe its too late ? He might have tried to force it already. If you have forced it and the valve is bent (not that hard to bend one really) if so it coud make it all a waste of time - ideally you need to do a compression test as soon as the belt goes on properly to make sure it is ok still or you might spend a lot of time diagnosing other things and chasing your tail as others have said - stop and wait till you can do it properly with the right tools or wait for some help
