So my car is doing this now.. I haven't touched the bushes from when I bought it. Similar thread I get just one loud thump whenever there is a decent change from acceleration or deceleration. My concern is that I can FEEL the rear subframe moving... I am planning on driving to zedfest and then down to Bega.. about 5000km round trip! Any chance something bad can happen? My understanding is the bush is likely collapsed / broken and the subframe and or diff is just moving? Nothing can come off or cause my car to break down? I do plan on fixing it but funds are tight atm!
My guesess would be either drive shaft center bearing/mount, or diff bushes, or maybe even the gearbox mount. But why not get it visually inspected by a mechanic? Much easier to identify such on a car-hoist, and since its got to the extreme of feeling vibrations/knocking around you're going to need to book it in for replacing/get quote.
I was thinking I would have to take it to mechanic to stick on a hoist to confirm what it is, just thought I would check on here first.
Sounds very similar to this. Note the date on that thread... I still haven't fixed it, some 70,000km later. Mostly because I only just found out without a shadow of a doubt what the cause was. My Diff bushes are absolutely F*CKED. How do I know? When I was bolting up my Driveshaft, specifically tightening up the bolts that hold the Shaft onto the Diff, it so happened that while doing so, the angle was such that when I put any pressure to tighten (Breaker bar was horizontal, pushing up), no joke, the entire front half of the Diff came up about an inch. Shocked the hell out of me. Front bushes were absolutely shredded and useless. Every other single bush along the Driveline has been changed except Diff. Already bought some replacement Nolethane ones, just waiting on time to swap em. Believe me if your Rear Subframe was moving even a little, the ass end of your car would be all over the place, you couldn't drive a straight line to save your life. How do I know? lol, years back, Rear Subframe bushes died too, was scary as hell driving her then. Couldn't put that one off, booked her in to have them changed a couple of weeks later. MoulaZX
I was wondering what happened. Sometimes My 1990 NA auto, has a thud in the rear when it changes down from second to first at LOW speed. eg. Approaching traffic lights. I have had a rear end smash and this was not something I noticed before hand. So I thought this thread might be relevant.
I had same problem as you, it was the center bearing. Initially the noise would happen when accelerating or deceleration, but if its not in gear no noise or vibration would occur. I left it for awhile but then the noises and vibration got louder. Should change it before you go to zedfest, cos when I changed mine the tailshaft was pretty smashed up. I bought mine for $70 at UAS
Simple rule, if there is just a thud from the rear and no vibrate = diff bushes. If there is thud from the rear + vibrate = good chance for centre bearing (could potentially be both too I suppose). MoulaZX
Thanks, I just have the thud without the vibrate and when I drove the car this morning after it was parked outside in the cold night, the thud wasn't there until I drove 15 kms.
