Quick question for those of you out there that have done this:

    a) Nissan OEM manual says to take manual transmission out with the engine.

    b) Looks like you can remove the engine and leave the transmission in.

Is it easier to do a) or b)? Both removal and instal.

A guide at disconnecting transmission from engine would be sweet if b) is the easiest!

    Cheers

Forget what Nissan say on this, drop the exhaust, tailshaft and gearbox first.
To remove with box connected, you'll need to remove the entire front end of the car.
    You'll need to
remove the bell housing bolts and to do this you have to drop the rear of the box to gain access.
You may have to remove your dump pipes from the turbo and this is easier when the box
is removed. Lable everything when you remove or disconnect things, this will make
the reassemble much simpler. Drain all fluids from the engine, remove the radiator, power steer
pump, unbolt the AC, fuel lines, engine mount bolts and all wire looms. once you start to lift motor ,
you can undo heater hoses and any earth wires, etc from the rear.
Note; before you start, degrease everything and WD40 any nuts/bolts to aid in removal.
This job is not for the novice and is better with help, 2 or 3 extra hands., you should budget
about 8-10 hours to remove completely. Good luck.

    Nissan is correct

They install the engine complete from underneath, much quicker and easier. They also remove it the same way, with the gearbox and all the accessaries attached. Offcourse you need a hoist.

    Yeah,

can't see anyone removing the engine and trans as one unit with an engine crane that's for sure.

The Nissan manual that shows taking the Engine + transmission out via the bonnet with an engine crane is:

The engines coming out that way regardless, was just curious if you could get the tranny off (hehehe i said i wanted to get a tranny off...gross) and just lift the engine by itself.

    Cheers for the answers.

I have done it that way a couple of times on the 280ZX. I seem to bump against the body a bit though. Preferably you have a gadget so you can vary the tilt of the engine/gearbox.

Otherwise, attach chains, lift a bit, the front comes up, roll car backwards a bit, lift a bit more, roll car a bit, lift more etc. The tricky thing is to adjust the tilt with the engine in the air, and not to ruin the paint.

It's a lot easier to undo the bellhousing bolts on the floor, than lying under the car. If you take the gearbox out first, you may need to undo the rear mount, lower the gearbox so you can get access to the upper bellhousing bolts. Then raise it again, prop the engine up, put the jack under the gearbox and pull it back. Hopefully it does not fall off the jack and crush your arms or head while you lower it.

How many people have removed a VG30DETT with this method? There is very little room to maneuver
as it is, but once the box is clear, the process is a lot simpler. Sure it is a bit difficult to
balance the box on a floor jack, but the tranny tunnel will keep the box from falling off
the side, and once you lower it, you just slide it out, it takes an hour or so to do.
This link http://www.zedworld.co.uk/wizzx.html is the safe way to do this,
it's not worth taking what may seem to be short cuts, when your only taking risks.

Tx off first. A lot easier. Engine won't move forward enough to lift as a complete unit without dropping sub- frame

Remembering I did it by myself:)

Removal and replace is doable as a complete unit.
Alan (mate) and I did a TT engine and trans (auto) transplant a couple of months back.
As they say its a tight fit but can be done.

We used seat belt straps around the plenum in a X format and the car was on axel stands front and back so the other guy could get underneath so we could make sure everything came out freely.

After the EGR delete the replacement was easier at the back.

Drain gearbox oil before to stop the mess as it will leak out of the rear yoke.

Easy ! Undo everything leave engine and gearbox connected .

Disconnect steering rod that meets steering rack . I do it at the nuckle end .

Undo four bolts for engine crossmember it will drop an inch or so . DW it will be ok .

Lift engine out ... done :)

When I pulled my engine I dropped the gearbox first...
    Literally dropped
Just stuck a mattress underneath it pulled it back and let it drop.
    Easy as.
Easier to put it back in with gearbox attached imo
