I washed and polished mine pretty much every week even if I didn't drive it... pretty obsessed about it being clean everytime I looked at it in the garage. Now my current car hasn't been washed since I bought it over 12 months ago because it's a piece of crap and I don't have to care So much less stress and worry. For the wheels I used a dish-scrubbing brush but now I know, a loo brush would have been much, much more effective!
