What the hell is this noise

Ill try to get a video clip up in a hour but what does this sound like?

At idle the engine sounds perfectly fine, no noise or anything. But soon as its under load or revving it makes a tapping and knocking noise which I think is a rod knock!? But a rod knock should be constant the whole time?

Could it be a bearing on its way out or ? I'll get the video out but before I rip the plenum off and rocker covers to check it out I'd like a rough idea where I am looking ?

well its not good what ever it is.
it will only really knock under load.

I reccently sold a zed to a fella (chopperholic on forum) which had a noise exactly like that, he drove it home from rocky to cairns and it shit itself when he nearly got there and wont start again :(

Well the z is still performing ok but the noise is annoying and intermittent but after the off 1600k from z fest its gotten worse .

2nd is external view of the car and noise 1st is engine bay.

AS you can now hear and see the sound at idle is not there but as soon as revs increase it starts ? :S . but even then it isnt 100% constant ?

It sounds very similar, mine was performing fine too but after ol mate took it on the long drive to cairns it just stopped.

Your fans not hitting anything ?

If it had a chain I would say it sounds like its hittin the side of the cover .

No it's not fan or anything I can hear it on left bank of the engine . Going to pull the timing covers off etc and listen some more try to pin point it . Hoping it's nothing like a bearing , maybe just a loose rear timing cover bolt

    That's bad news mate.
I'd at least have a look at what's in the engine oil, and see what's stuck in the oil filter.

Well I did a oil change before z fest and nothing. So the oil is only 1600k but I'm going to drain it and remove the sump to check it out and f nothing pull the plenum and cam covers to check everything properly

Oh nooo's man. That sounds no good at all. I would have picked it as a possible loose timing belt flapping on the top covers but that's a definite metallic knock. I've heard similar noises from engines that have busted big end bearings. Pull it apart before you keep running it into oblivion.

Not good news either way :(

Sounds really bad mate =( Rebuild time in the works.
Seems like that parts list is a definite go ;)

Not good sounds like a big end bearing in the bottom end
Time to pull the donk sorry least you got to and home from zedfest

so now the question is where do i start from here ?

my plan is tomorrow to pull the radiator out (drained of course),
remove timing covers and intake pipes.
    Inspect timing belt

This will rule out the loose timing belt slap or a bolt loose etc.

    after this,

i then plan to remove the oil from the engine, and remove the sump and check it out and inspect for debris etc.

If clear then would me best bet be to remove the plenum, rocker covers, and check out the heads etc for heads / bearings and go from here.

engine itself appart from this noise seems to perform ok so if i get onto this early enough i might be able to save myself some money.

    keep in mind.

the noise in this video is 2 seperate things.
There is a valve tap (which i have known about for a while) but the deeper louder noise is more a recent development.

does it idle rough at all ?

could it be a stuck valve ?

Me too :( least it got me home from z fest and up to see you all ...

It could be a loose harmonic balancer too as the sound only kicked in on load . I already had a big rebuild planned to chase 400rwkw. Just intended to make motor ex though as I was invited to the indoor arena. :'(

So where do I go from here ? Check sump for particles?
Remove plenum and cam covers to look for loose bearings etc ?

If it was me , I would pull the motor out and strip it down . Then push forward my rebuild . You cant get to the sump without pulling it . And unless you take heads off you cant see whats happening valve/piston wise .

By the time you stip the front and the plenum and possibly heads you may as well make it easier on yourself and pull the motor .

Me too just so many things it can be and I do not have the funds to push my build forward at the moment or the ability to pull the engine for a month or so .... :( so I'll have to strip it down in car maybe a timing belt slap or failed tensioner
