Okay, I'm installing the new cd stereo and I had never seen an "illumi" wire on the back of a stereo before, so I ignored it like the mute control wire and the steering remote control wire.

Imagine my surprise when I started the car up for a inspection and the stereo didn't light up! Uh oh I thought, and plugged a cd in to see if it worked. It did! :D

It is my first cd player with a illumi wire, to connect to the dimmer control wire. There is a lot of wiring under the dash of these things and I was hoping that someone might steer me in the right direction as to what colour wire I am looking for and where abouts under the dash I might find it. I had a look in the tech section but i couldn't find what I was looking for.

Has anyone done this one before and what's the easy way?

    cheers

Maybe run it down under the console to cigar lighter Bulb is or Auto selector light bulb if its an auto and splice into that. They seem like the easiest ones to access.

If it works the way I understand it should, the illumination wire only dims the display when the lights are on. I hope your cd player isn't dodgy!

That thought occured to me too. I'll check the fuses on the stereo and see if I have blown one, other than that I guess it's going back to autobarn for an exchange.

It might just be "illumination" ie connect to 12V for lighting, not a "dimmer" wire that needs to be connect to running lights so brightness is dipped at night. What do the instructions say to connect it to ?

Either way everything you need is on the clock plug, nice and handy.

See this thread for details: http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=267186

Easy way is to have a test light turn the lights to parkers and on the plug for the stock head unit put the test light in each pin till the test light lights up then turn off and see if it goes off then on again. That is your illumination.

Dude, thanks. The instructions say to connect it to a dimmer control wire, and you're right, everything I need is on the clock. Thanks for the link. I'll try it tomorrow in the daylight when I'm sober.

    Cheers everyone

Just be aware that the clock stuff is fused at 10A, the cigarette lighter is fused at 20A, original stereo is fused at 10A.

Wiring diagrams, colours etc can be found on EL-89 and EL-93 in the manual.

    Illum Wire is optional.
It will just dim the backlighting on the screen when your lights are on. it requires 12v switched when the headlight switch is on, the wire for that is in the factory stereo plug along with all the speaker & power wires, will also be down at the clock.

Mute wire is to mute the sound when you have a hands free phone kit when you are in a call. It will mute the sound when you earth it.

Sounds like a faulty head deck then. It will play cds but it will not light up so it's not a fuse.

What brand is it? Have you got both power wires hooked up? there is 2.
    Yellow will be Constant/always on
    Red will be acc switched
Black will need to be earthed to the body. im fairly sure there is not a earth wire in the factory radio loom.

Yeah, both power wires are connected. It's earthed too. Like I said, it plays cds so it's working, the front just doesn't light up. It's a kenwood. I'll give autobarn a ring about it today.

So... you have your acc, earth and batter wires hooked up.. AND the illumination wire?
The illumi may need to be hooked up to power the lights regardless of your car lights being on or off...

Reminds me of when peoples PC's wont work and you walk them through EVERYTHING, but really it just needs to be turned on at the wall.

    At least its fixed mate.
