Power steer Cutting in and Out

    Hey i have a 1990 Aus Spec Auto vg30 have a bit of a problem with my power steering. Steering is always hard and every now and then without warning power steer comes back for about 2mins then back off. power steer has fluid no leaks on pump hoses ok dont no whats the matter any help be great or info how to test for a problem cheers

    check the electrics, check the factory manual for the diagnostics you can do.

    Most likely you have a bad connection somewhere and I would check the plug going to the steering rack first. It's just behind the front wheel, drivers side and hangs down in all the wet and muck.

    I agree - sounds electrical!

    Give MadDog a yell - he had a similar issue (cutting in/out) and replaced a number of power steering components to no avail. I think I remember that he found an electrical short though, so perhaps search for his threads or give him a yell to find out how he handled it. :)

    had that very same problem for a year also and after countless hours and money spent, one of the forum member (xavier) told me to run direct 12 volts to solenoid on the steering rack, such and easy mod but so effective. for the first time i really enjoyed driving my Z without any issues. good luck

    do you loose the variable speed though?.....from factory, you are meant to have lots of assistance at low speeds, and very little assistance at high speeds....

    yer i have nothing at all like driving a old truck lol then out of no where steering comes good for around 2mins then gone
