Hey guys i was driving around today and noticed that the 'lights' light was lit up on the dash.
Then when i was heading home the 'lights' light and the 'battery' light were both lit up.... I let the car sit for 5 mins when i got home then started it again and they were both off?
What do you reckon is causing this?

    Cheers

    Is your alternator charging?
Measure across battery terminals with a multimeter, should read around 13.8 Volts with the engine running.

As Mitch has stated, the likely culprit is a faulty charging system.
Check the battery voltage at high idle and make sure it's above 13 volts.

pretty sure my alternator is on its way out.... same thing kept happening today when idling in traffic and only under 1500 rpm the lights would start to dim and a buzzing noise behind the dash then after driving around for a bit at high rpm it would go back to normal!

What do you guys think, buy a new alternator and chuck it in?

I found some on eBay in Melbourne but these were the brand new ones:

you think that'll do, im wanting to get this sorted asap before the car decides it dosent want to go any more??

    Cheers

Could it also possibly be a loose belt, thats on its way out thats causing the alternator not to charge?

    1. Buy a $5 multimeter from a hardware store
    2. Number 1 ^^^ will be your best friend while working on your Z
    3. Check charging voltage as said above by pex and myself Let us know what voltage you get
    4. Slipping belt will make a squealing noise like those horse things off lord of the rings...
    5. New alternators used to be around the $500 mark. Not sure what they cost now.
    6. Removal (DIY) and a reco by an auto electrician should cost around $200
    7. I've been thru all this before. Trust me.
    8. Problem solved

BTW: that ebay link is just the regulator. That is part of the rebuild a auto sparky would do. You also want new bushings and bearings in your alternator. Do it properly, otherwise it will be squealing in a few mone months / years... especially after you re-tension the new belt that you will be putting on it (hint)

    Same trouble

we have a zx that has the battery light and lights warning on all the time. 3 weeks many people have looked at it but no luck also keeps blowing eng cont fuse

I had the exact same problem with my high output alternator, all dash lights coming on at bottom left, would go off some times, and would get clicking noises from the dash also. car never died, battery never went dead and everything worked as it should, was just very annoying, my volts were always above 14, and everything seemed fine.

Decided to switch over to a brand new oem alternator just to check, and fixed the issue, have not got around to pulling apart my high output alt yet, but im guessing it was a problem with the voltage regulator.

did you have problems with the fuse or just the alt if i replace the fuse the lights go off but after a few hours or days the fuse blows and the light come back on. its driving me crazy.i have pulled everything apart on both zx's and swapped just about everything i could but the alt.

didnt have any drama's with the fuse from memory, just the lights always coming on, if the fuse is blowing, from mind something could be shorting some where. which fuse is blowing? this will lead you to whats causing the problem

    * Note do NOT install a higher amp fuse, you risk fire and death!

+1 for the multimeter, invaluable piece of hardware, personally I use a slightly more expensive one, because I like electronics for a hubby, but they are useful for things like current drains and such also with the 300ZX, if the battery voltage is low, make sure you try the Alt B+ (output) also, because it could be a loose/dirty main charge cable being the problem. also make sure your regulator cables are tight and corrosion free, as this can result in spiky and dangerous voltages which can kill your battery and alternator.

    hope this helps a little

    ummm

from mind, things i think associated with the eng cont circuit are(but im not 100% sure):

    02 sensors
    afm
    egr
    charcoal canister

check wires and sensors associated with these

can any one else elaborate on this, im sure there is something im not thinking of
