If i turn the key it makes the sound its meant to, battery is fine, everything under the bonnet turns like normal, the car sounds like its so close to firing up but it just wont. Its a Auto NA.
Ive had a s13 turbo, s14 turbo, slowly learnt the CA and SR engines, but im a total n00b with the VG30.

Any assistance where to start looking would be muchly appreciated

Search is your friend mate! This has been covered millions of times :D

Most likely culprit is a series 1 PTU - try cleaning the connectors first, or replace with a known working unit to test. :)

It's the little grey box located on the front drivers side of engine next to coolant hoses.

I'd probably start checking the PTU connection. Unhook, retension, clean up from dirty insulators then put it back. Let us know if that helps...

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

Further to this, also check the CAS connector too. If it's corroded or not connected properly, it will cause the engine to either run like crap or not start at all...

    well....

yeah the oldies that you remember are still around, they just very rarely post much these days. We still all see each other either at club related events or non-club related social events.

As for your car, if its cranking, so many things it could be. As a start, you would need to check if the engine is getting fuel and spark. If thats ok, then its time to start investigating things like the quality of the spark plugs. Etc, Etc.... Also check the PTU. If thats dead, your car wont start. Then start checking things like ignition timing, CAS etc etc..... but start with the easy things first.

If its not cranking, then your battery is dead, or your starter motor is knackered.

Colin! Its great seing some familiar names still here.

So i did the above ideas. The car is now running!
Unplugged and cleaned the connections for the PTU and CAS.

    And it kicked over fine.
Ill enjoy this, because its probally the easiest cheapest fix ill experience. :D

I had a tail light out, which i fixed today, then realised the 3 globes in the spoiler taillight were not even there, so i got some of them too. I cant beleive there are 7 brake globes. Crazy stuff!

I drove past another guy in a 300, it was my first time seing a 300, while driving my new 300, i gave him a wave, and he greased me off. Ahhh how times have changed.

    Thanks for the assistance fellas.

    So then....

so where did you buy the car from?? Do you know the history of it??

I wouldnt worry about the greasy look. Some zed owners will wave or flash lights, other will just ignore you. Just cop it on the chin. Personally, I always wave or flash lights when seeing another zed :).

Good to hear you got it started. I cant wait till I get my car back :(

welcome from the new fellows as well. I envy you and the others in some ways though, at least you get to see other Z's I know of one that is permanently garaged and one that comes out once a year from the appearances I have seen. I want to see more....

Evil Twin Time to 'Suit Up'!

My engine has been intermittently cutting out for months. Finally found the culprit today after breaking down 6x times in an hour. One of the plugs mounted next to the under bonnet fusebox wasnt connected properly (looked fine). Only caught it because I heard the solonide kick in while I was getting my 2 year old to turn the car over while we were broken down on the side of the road this morning!

This was after I had swaped the PTU, cleaned all CAS - PTU and checked COP connectors etc etc...

Another thanks to the mad scientist - your phone assistance made sure I was on the right track. Was bizzare though how it would be so intermittent - seemed like other possibilities. Ended up being so simple!

Now I am only running on 5 - just swapped the COPs over on the dead cyclinder and it made no differance. Tomorrow I will double check the connecter then Ill change the plugs in the morning.
