Maybe PTU failure??

    Hi everyone :)

Been a while since I've posted, mainly because the zed has been running beautifully without any hiccups for awhile.......until TODAY

Developed a misfire on the way to a mates place in Brisbane. Diagnosed to a faulty coil pack on Cyl 1. It had actually melted the plastic inside the coil, smoke pouring from it. Got hold of another, but the misfire is still there, just not as severe.

I've swapped coil packs with a working one, still present. Checked the injector with the good old screwdriver to ear trick, ticking nicely. Swapped spark plugs around, still misfiring. Even tested the coil pack for spark, weak but present, when compared to the others. Even when swapping, same result.

Checked connections on the PTU, seem fine.

I'm still running the S1 PTU so I've concluded, that the burnt out coil pack may have burnt out the PTU? Maybe possible? What do others think?

I can't use consult due to my cable being broken :(

    Cheers,
    Adam

I've only had one coilpack melt and fail and that was my mistake when wiring up new connectors(got two wires crossed). Just check that you dont have any connectors that are not insulated properly or broken.

Adam, pop around some time and try against one of my spare working PTU's mate. :)

I'm stuck in Brisbane Benny. When I have it running, the coil pack in cyl 1 is getting really hot. So not really safe to drive.

check your grounds dude, sounds like the coil pack ground is loose :eek::eek:

+1 mate you're gonna keep frying coilpacks if you don't work out where your short is

The plenum grounds are one of the first / easiest to diagnose - there's one right behind coilpack no.6 and other towards the centre of the back of the plenum.

All grounds are good. Cant see any broken wires anywhere

another great test could be to do a continuity test between the Cyl 1 coil pack connector and the corresponding PTU connector pins, if you get solid continuity, then try wiggling the wires to see if there's an intermittent cracked wire in between...

But if that's all looking good, it's either like you said, a failing PTU, or otherwise possible poor connection or cracked wire between the PTU and the ECU side... (that would then be the next section to test for continuity...

Shame you're stuck a hundred or so km's away bro, otherwise it would have been fixed by now. :)

Getting a s2 ptu tonight. It needs to be done. Hopefully it will fix it. Will let yas know tonight. :)

That's great bro. Fingers crossed it's just that.
Although, before re-wiring the loom to suit a S2 PTU, it would be a very quick and easy test to just locate a member nearby to try a swap with S1 PTU just to confirm this is the issue....
Anyway, good luck buddy! Hey will you be back around next weekend of the 5th March? :br:

As promised, comprehensive installation details (courtesy of our awesome member "Vader") below.....

And if you need it, here's the link to the full thread: HERE! :zlove:

Good luck Adz, hopefully that's just the problem mate. Post up your results buddy. :)

s2 ptu installed......still no go and on top of that, just blew the guts out of cyl 1 coil pack again....

I'm now thinking there must be a broken wire somewhere. Will check continuity of the connector tomorrow, when I go buy a multimeter. It sucks not having my tools on hand.

If I have no luck Benny, I might be turning up at your place with a trailered zed :p

Could you run wires directly from the p.t.u to the coil to see if this helps as if it does would more than likely indicate a problem in the loom ?.

After some testing today, I found that the PTU signal wire on the coil pack plug was earthing out. Looks like I have a short in the loom somewhere, so for now, I have ran a wire directly from the PTU to the coil and all six cylinders are firing perfectly again :)

My only problem is, I know have 2 stuffed coil packs. They have cracks in the casings and leaking out spark.

Any one in the northern brisbane surburbs have 2 spare coil packs for me?

    Cheers
