Just wondering if we could borrow a little of your time to try and figure out what is wrong with our engine.

Our ECUtalk display gave us an 11 CAS, under the fault sections and it's running really badly, it stalls in idle, acceleration fairly delayed and laboured. Before plugging in the ecu my dad thought CAM Timing might be out to cause this, but he is an old ford man what would he know. (JK) We heard a bit of a rattle in the rocker cover above number 5 cylinder. Open to any suggestions or help you could have for us please. Thankyou. We have read alot of threads and used the search on CAS, Cam angle sensors, Harness connectors, etc just very depressing, hoping the problem isn't too bad. I am thinking if the harness connector is ok then it's the sensor, but dont know how to check. Thanks in advance for any help as i know you guys are always a great help it's a great community to be a part of.

Have you tried cleaning and checking the CAS plug to make sure its all connected nicely.

If the CAS is disconnected or poorly connected, it can send the timing of the engine off pretty badly.

Second cleaning the cas plug and also terminals on the cas. While your at it do all the injector and coil pack connectors and terminals. If the car is running crap it may knock a bit so try and sort that out and see if the knocking stops. My first thing to check now is all the connectors because i have found it is a problem with the z. Get some terminal/electronics cleaner and lube as it will come in handy ( around $10 at jcar or Electronic Dicks ). Also vacum leaks can be a problem.
    Cheers Dave

Ok thankyou for your help so far, just went out and removed plug and checked the terminals, they were a little dirty in colour but nothing extreme, cleaned and blew out as much as we could, reconnected and no difference.

My dad thoguht it sounded like a massive misfire(s), as myself held the car at 1500 rpm, he began to remove coilpack leads one by one, and found i am 3 cyclinders down. We then thoguht maybe sparkplugs, but 3 out of 6 sparkplugs dying was a little odd, so he earthed it to the engine and we got spark. We are now scratching our heads as to what else to do, as it is late we didnt check the other two, but will tomorrow. Any more thoughts or suggestions. Anyone at all. Hoping it isnt serious. :(

Thankyou again for your help and support.

When i bought mine it would stall then not restart. I cleaned the connectors but it still played up so i bought new injector connectors then soldered them in and it ran perfect. I have since replaced the coil pack connectors and all the others including cas. I still think this should be your first fix before looking for anything major. Look in the for sale section as a member sell the injector conectors for under $10 each . The coil pack connectors you can get from Concept in the states very quick and cheaper than oz. Also check if your car has a Series 1 or 2 P.T.U and also the P.T.U connectors as these corrode and require cleaning also and can cause bad running. Do a search to see the difference between a series 1 and 2 P.T.U and if you have a Series 1 buy a Series 2 of member Vader in the for sale section and swap it as the Sries 1 give a lot of trouble.
    Good Luck dave

Hopefully that is our problem i will clean/check the connectors tommorrow while i wait for it to arrive. your help is overwhelming i cannot thank you enough. Fingers crossed this works.

your saying pulling the connector off 3 of the coil packs does nothing.
But when you earth the coil pack you get spark if yes to this then its fuel ur missing or compression hoping not that one..

but saying you have cas error yes it can drop the 3 injectors from firing fuel into engine. if you have cleaned it and really cleaned it then borrow a cas from someone in sydney easy to remove and try another, then if that doesnt work borrow a ecu sometime the fuel side of ecu's plays up a bit like a-bris-z thread

    cheers Bryan

Could it be that these plugs have been fouled and need replacing.

Yes we tried all 6 of the coilpacks as we had the car sitting on 1.5k rpm-2k rpm and he tried each indiviudally, as he took the first off the RPM dropped and he reconnected it and it went back up to the starting RPM, the second coilpack was removed and it didnt make a difference. We did this for all 6, and only 3 made a difference in being removed, we thought the sparkplug was dead, so he unscrewed the whole pack and put the sparkplug in the end of it and earthed it to the top of the plenum, it got spark, so we jumped back on the computer to see what we could find. We will try the PTU first, but i see what you are saying, hoping it isn't compression.

Yes our ECUTalk display unit says under it's fault tab '11 CAS'
We looked it up and it means Cam Angle Sensor or Crank Angle Sensor they said both in the one post. We did clean the little connector piece '4 prong' looking thing, although i don't feel like it sits 'snug' if you get me. I am not sure what zedders do live nearby, i haven't seen one around my area. Are CAS or ECU's expensive to replace? Also what about the Harness Connector for the CAS, if that was faulty could it explain the problems. I am tired so im probably making no sense, but again, thankyou all for your help, it really is overwhelming.

    If you

saw a spark on the three cylinders that were not firing, then its unlikely the ptu is the problem. Read above, he is on the money. CAS

make sure the cas plug is sitting hard into its place. in short it controls injectors turning on and off..

i have spare ecu and cas for sale but put up a wanted to borrow in your area see if they are the fault before buying.

One of the best things on this forum is the info but whats even better are the people hanging out with other zedders is what its all about, When i was up in sydney last the forum guys were all great im sure some are willing to help you out...

again check cas connector i have had one not sit in all the way and it ran on 3 cylinders get something to hold it on BUT WATCH OUT FOR THE FAN!!!! and check injector connectors on the 3 that dont fire... use a little file to clean them

I had my dad hold the Harness Connector in hard and still didn't make a difference, got him to wiggle it a bit, still nothing. I am hoping it's the PTU, failing that, a CAS or ECU would be nice to think would fix it. Dreading it being anything else, the sparkplugs themselves haven't done more than 100km's.

If the injector connectors are still making the sparkplug spark, they are still in working order and not fouled in anyway though correct? If so then we got a spark on them so it must be the PTU or CAS. God i can't wait to get this up and running again, quite a scare.

I really do thank you all for your help, you don't know what it means to me. This community really is amazing, other car forums don't even come close.

Don't know if you made a typo but the injector connectors are different to the coil pack connectors ( the coil pack connectors are related to the spark- the injectors to the fuel delivery )

    its

not the ptu, your old man proved that by grounding the plugs, and you said they fired right? if the ptu was the problem, there would be no spark.

Yes sorry typo on that, we checked the coilpack with the sparkplug in it. Not sure how we test the injector connector, i will have a look tomorrow after work and give them a clean.

Probably so beaver, just thinking about fuel, maybe getting the CAS/ECU swapped out and testing.

Thanks for all your help and advice, i will report back tomorrow afternoon once iv'e had another play around.

Remove the CAS plug again, Ensure both male and

female terminals are bright and clean. Then retension the female plug terminals so they will "bite down" on the males when reconnected. This is especially important. Take your time and ensure all female terminals are closed down enough.

In 95% of code 11 CAS related error codes, its just the connection. Nothing more...:D

I had the same problem some time back..Started the car..running very rough, checked the coils (resistance), plugs...plugs had spark when removed and earthed..fiddled with conectors, finaly replaced the hot water sensor..all good again and the engine fired on all 6. By the way I later had an engine rebuild done because of other issues, which, included changing the PTU.
These type of motors are very sensitive to any sensor malfunction, they send low voltage signals to the ECU..Any increase in resistance varies the voltage..
