Battery charger - solar

I have a Z that comes out about once every 3 months (200K last year)

As a consequence, I have battery issues - as in it goes flat often.

I need to keep it connected for the alarm.

I have seen a solar battery charger at Super Cheap, which plugs in to the cigarette lighter, which in turn charges the battery.

Would this pose any sort of problem to the electrics? Seems like a solution to my problem, but just don't want to damage anything.

    Any thoughts appreciated..

On my ZX the cig Lighter has no power on it when egn.is off so check that first for power,if none you may have to fit alligator clips instead of the cig plug on the solar charger leads to connect to battery.

    need constant charge

The jump kit is an idea, however, I am trying to avoid the battery going completely flat as I want to keep the alarm operative, and I believe allowing a car battery to go flat often is not so good for them.

    Thanks for your input though.

    alligators the go

That was my thoughts also, but I just thought the cig lighter option sounded kinda cool and "techie". Thanks

    scarey thought

Seemed too good to be true that I could just bung it in the cig lighter and all would be good. Back to the alligator clips. Thanks

Ised to have the same problem because my 300ZX would sit for 3 mths at a time unused. That kills the battery because alarm/mobilizer and clock drain it down and then it used to sit in discharged condition. Only used to get 18mths from a battery. Then I purchased a trickle charger from Battery World, wired it up to the battery terminals so its a simple plug-in/plug-out connection and just plug it into the Zed when I go away. The trickle charger cost about $65 3 years ago, and keeps battery fully charged when I'm away. It has electronic circuitry built in to just give a maintenance charge when battery is full. Anyway, since then never had a problem until today, when battery was a bit slow - had to get new battery today, but since I got 3 1/2 trouble free years out of the battery I'm not complaining. A trickle charger is the way to go providing you have a garage and power point for the Zed.

Buy a product called ' INOX ' battery conditioner. It cost's under $10 and you add it to each cell of the battery. It is trully amazing stuff. I had a ride on mower battery last 3 months so when i replaced it i put this stuff in and 7 1/2 years later i can still let it sit for 3 + months then go out and she cranks fine. Also put it in my triton when i put a new battery in 6 years ago and still going strong despite me being slack and not checking water in battery for 3 years and finding it empty( the dam thing was still working fine ) put water in and 3 years on it still goes no problem.:D

A big battery and a good trickle charger is the way to go. I don't live in the same city as where I keep my zed, so I only see it every few months. It's plugged into the wall when I'm away and she never has any battery issues ever.

I went to town and boot mounted the battery and charger in the spare wheel well.

I use a "battery tender" which I attach to my cars and bikes when not using. Auto charges batterys then holds the charge continually. It works fantastic costs about $60.00 let me know and I'll chase it up for you I got mine from a battery specialist here is SA called "Northern Batteries" I have been told repco sell them also

+1 for the battery tender, basicly a trickle charger to keep the battery at peak charge for use.

Any trickle charger will do. Supercheap sell them.

My Z is a weekender and this setup works brilliantly. No flat battery and no issues with battery life either.

there is another option. There are dual cell (not really the right term) batteries available, ones that have a go flat protection when they get below a certain output capacity they shut down power supply so you still have a start available.

Sounds like a good idea but will render his alarm useless.

Ctek make a range of chargers and are very well thought of and don't seem too expensive.

Search the forum for Ctek, will find a few first hand reports.

All so see EBay for pricing, apparently Repco carry them also.

Another point, you should be starting your car and letting it run for 10-15 mins at least once a week, even if you aren't driving it.

    plenty of options

Looks like a trickle charger is the way to go. Still like the idea of a solar charger - very green! Sounds like I am not the only one having trouble keeping the charge in my battery. I guess I should drive the Z more often - best option.

    Thanks for all the tips.

nah mine lasts about 5-7 days before the battery is to drained to start. And that is with a brand new battery (550 cca btw)

As mentioned by other members, trickle charge is the best option IMO.I got one off ROB260 some time ago & never had battery issues since.Speak to Rob as that's what he does for a living,(Batterys).

    Cheers
