brake lights

hi guys,

as stupid as it sounds, i've been driving around with no break lights for the last 3 weeks, havnt had the time to look into what the problem was. today after finally finding the right fuse for the break lights, pulled it out and it was blown, put another one in there and it blew, put another 2 in just to make sure, all blew. tail lights work, just not break lights

im not a guru when it comes to the wiring and all that of these cars so any help on what to look for/fix would be greatly appreciated.

Behind driver's side boot trim, there's a small black box. Unplug it, open it up, re-solder the dry joints most commonly seen on the resistors. Or get someone else's working black box. I have one working one left if you get desperate...

Hang on Rollin. let's just take a short brake at this point.
The title now has "brake" spelled correctly and all other references to the subject contained herein are still spelled "break".

How did you go with soldering it?

 

soldering iron is at a mates house so will do it tomorrow morning.
looking at both sides of the connection, the bottom one as i said that looked stuffed is much the same on the connection attached to the car.

if the connection on the bottom BRAKE wiring is corroded and maybe not connecting properly it would cause it to blow the fuse?

if i solder up the connection bit on the black box and maybe cut the old connector attached to the car and replace it would that be better?

 

Fuses melt when the current flowing through it is above its rated threshold... but yes replacing the terminals would be a better solution.
You can also delete the black box entirely and short each of 3 the pairs of terminals.

 

what exactly is the black box, and what does it do?
what would deleting it involve?

 

Basically it's a circuit that turns on that "LIGHTS" warning in your dash when one of your tail light globes blow (ie. change in resistance). However because of its age and deteriorating parts, it doesn't always work exactly as it's designed.
If you delete the black box, you won't get that "LIGHTS" warning in your dash anymore.

 

so deleting it would solve my problems?

You just connect a piece of wire between the RH tail pair, LH tail pair & stop pair on the connector side, effectively bypassing the black box.

can you take a photo of your connector? (what the blackbox plugs to) So I can point out what you need to short.

wasnt the black box thing in the end. the wiring from the black box forward wasnt receiving an electrical current, rewired it and i now have brake lights thanks to all those who helped, and :F: to all those who didnt like my grammar. lol
