found the NA project needed an AFM replacement, so bought this
    http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=305441

Strangely enough, was the same car that I put an offer in on Boostcruising website. Guy I bought it off beat me to it by a few hours.

Not running, hopefully putting that down to 1 SMIC removed, BOV's removed and not blocked off, boost controller removed and not blocked, PTU incorrectly wired. State of the oil explains the "lifter noise". Doesnt look like its been changed for some time now.

Today will tell if its a goer or not. S2 PTU and harnesses that came with car will be wired properly, all leaks patched to a substantial stage, and will see what happens from there.

100K service sticker is on (water pump and bypass hoses look relatively new), o2 sensors have been replaced lately, master cylinder looks new..... a few goodies on there.... titanium key set etc.

No photos as of yet, prioritising with getting it running.

Sounds good Michael. You can never have too many zeds!

    :)

not keeping this one. Condition of motor will determine whether or not Im parting it out immediately, or replacing front guard (missing) and bumper (almost new Urethane TT front bar that came with it is going on the NA) and sellling it as a running unit. a TT manual 2+2 (shudders) for $1300 was too cheap to pass up, especially with the slightest of chances it runs.

    What's the interior like ?

    full tweed. usual wear.
Reckon a CAS fitted 180-degrees around will affect ability to run? :p

mwuahahahahhaha! My boat runs..... on 3 cylinders thus far. Timing belt was off 1 tooth per sprocket.... all in different directions.
Time to hook up cooling system and let it idle up to operating temp.

    Wow, that one looks familiar...

My best mate used to own that one, he imported it back in '05 I believe. I have some of the original piccies of when it got off the boat and when he had it, I'll dig them up. I fiddled with it a bit, chucked in some boost jets, changed shifter bushings and whatnot.

Was a mint Zed when he had it. Always kept immaculate and polished. Sold it to a guy up the Sunny Coast.

The titanium key on that one is original too. Had Potenza shocks and springs on it. Whole brake system was rebuilt as he put power steering fluid in the brake master and killed all the seals...

yeah, not quite immaculate now. Reasonably straight and virtually complete however. Shocks and springs are still in it, with adjustable front camber arms. Front rotors are slotted. Havent delved into the depths of turbos yet. Boost controller has been removed and blocked off. Drivers side SMIC was replaced with a bypass pipe, now refitted.
Have blanked off most of the vaccuum leaks.... hopefully enough to get it running. No terminal noises as yet, but bringing up error code 21 (ignition circuit).
*PTU has been changed to S2, soldered in and a known working one.
*All plenum earths are fitted, and continuity between plenum, body earths and battery earth.
*Coilpacks all tested to be working.
*Plugs are Iridium and fouled. Might have to try some coppers.
*Continuity exists between PTU terminals and coilpacks
    *Coilpack earth continuity is good.
*Coilpacks have 12V from Ign Relay with Ignition on.
*CAS was 180-degrees around. All injectors click with rotation.
    *TPS was set to .3V

Will test from ECU harness pins to PTU terminals tomorrow... too many squitos out.

    Piccies!

These first ones were taken in Feb '05 at the compliance shop (SVI), had 100300k's on it. Wheels were originally Stern's, but were replaced at a later date (and cost more than what you paid of the Zed )

And this one is of my old NA and your TT down at Wivenhoe dam (look how empty it was!)

And couple of piccies of when it got the new wheels on. It was literaly same day (Feb '07, was sold a few months later).

Those wheels were on it still with previous sale, came with factory alloys this sale.
Front bar has been replaced with a new Urethane unit.
    Same exhaust still.
Clear tail conversion is still fitted and still in rather good condition.

Continuity exists between ECU plug and PTU inlet plug, still throwing me a code 21 on both ECU and ECUTalk. Running out of things to test? Try another ECU? The Coilpack connectors are shot, but still doing the job atm. Not game to pull the injectos connectors, but they're definitely cycling and its getting fuel.
Am only going to the trouble as its a TT manual, and much as I despise 2+2's, it would be a shame to scrap if a lot of "little" things added up to car not running. Pending engine diagnoses- another drivers guard, front bar and couple of paint touch-ups and it will be quite presentable again. Might put it under wraps until the NA is resprayed and sold.

    ECU plug sitting correctly?

    I'd be trying another ECU.

pulled plug for continuity testing. No bent pins and plug was and now is bolted in straight and secure.
Troublesome ECU earth point in still good also.
Will try the ECU out of my slicktop TT tomorrow, already looking like a drunken cane toad with all of the mozzie bites.

Just breazed thru this thread and didn't read much of your dribble about your alledged boat, anyhow did you check the cas and it's connector? They can throw a 21 as well.

crapola, CAS can throw the same fault? Only attention CAS has received is rotating it 180-degrees to proper orientation, rotating shaft to initiate injectors and ascertaining good condition of plug.
Will try unit from Slicktop TT, it needs a repolish anyway.

Code 21 is primary ignition circuit fault, not necessarily ptu only. The ecu is looking for TDC #1 to begin firing the coils and injectors, then a signal every 60* from the cas followed by a primary ignition signal from each coil to collapse the magnetic feild. If it doesn't see the signal from the cas or coils it will throw code 21.

The ecu know's the engine is cranking beacause it has seen a start signal from the key, an rpm signal from the cas spinning past #1 tdc and is now waiting for signals every 60* from both the cas and coils.

Just so happens the ptu is between the ecu and coils and is the weak link in the system.

How was the cas 180 out, did it only have the top and bottom bolts in it? I would not have thought the wiring harness would stretch around to the other side??? If it was stretched around the other side, strip the wires back and check for breaks or badly opened up pins.

CAS only had the upper bolt in it. Loom was twisted, but didnt appear damaged. Will try another and test harness tomorrow.

Tell ya, if you were a chick, single, hot and a 2+0 fan..... I'd snap you up.... and get you to work on my car in the nude.... and that's not just all the rum talking :D
