hi all, As you may have noticed I'm fairly new to the zed scene, however not the nissan one, having been an enthusiast for a while and owning an R33 for 5yrs. i now have my 'new' 300zx and and couldn't be more impressed! I am however looking to upgrade the brakes slightly and was wondering if my standard sized rotors and calipers from the R33 GTS-T skyline would fit my '91 300zx N/A?? Any help and guidance would be much appreciated!!!! Sam.
Yeah they'll fit up fine as long as your doing both the calipers & rotors, worth doing a master cylinder brace too if you can get your hands on one. cheers, tim
I had an R33 Turbo (GTST) it was a fun car, but I'm now really enjoying the handling and looks of the zed! I've done a little more research and found that there is no real advantage to swapping the brakes over, they use the same calipers and pads anyway.
upgrade an easy upgrade for the NA brakes is to get your hands on a set of TT rotors and calipers and change them over, If you dont want to go that far then just new slotted rotors and good pads makes a world of difference. While you have your calipers off give them a good service and make sure all the pistons are working properly. My experience was that when I pulled my calipers apart 3 of the four pistons in each was not working properly, also bleed all the fluids aswell. Hope this helps, Andy
didn't think of that option, good idea! Good to know there's people on here who know about brake servicing aswell, i'm always amazed at work hearing people say "oh, i didn't know i had to maintain my calipers and brake fluid!"
yes it is, and ironically enough, i used to have the pearl AVS rims on my skyline! they nearly ended up on my zed, but i much prefer the works!
does your na calipers take 28mm disks or 30mm like the tt's? I think you'll find the gtst combo is more like the tt's so if you've currently got the 28mm ones then the gtst will still be an upgrade. Another option is r34 gtt brakes which are 310mm dia. so a decent upgrade, I'm currently refreshing a set to fit myself. You need to drill out the bolt holes in the hub from 12mm to 14mm but otherwise bolt straight up. cheers, tim
ah good point, didn't think of the width. I'm thinking that I'll just go slotted and upgrade the pads, that way everything bolts on and its less fiddling around for the small performance increase! thanks for the good advice, good to know there is people here who know their stuff! look forward to meeting members at the first event i can get to!
If you have R33 GTST brakes already I would be putting them on. NA Z's only run a 280x26mm rotor compared to 296x30mm rotor for the GTST.
the calipers won't bolt straight up though will they? I'm not that confident in my abilities when it comes to custom modifications of key componenets :S
The calipers should bolt up fine, there was a member selling a set he'd been using a couple months back so maybe have a search for further proof. As long as your using the appropriate rotors you should be good to go, its only once you go to the r34 gear that you need minor modifications.
oh ok, hmmm interesting! if it all just bolts on its worth a shot! If I have any problems I'll no doubt be on here pleading for more help!
