    Hi all, newbie here.

After years of owning falcodores and lusting after zeds, I finally bought a 1990 auto TT four days ago! :D

... and that's where the happiness ends, because the transmission died today with a loud clunk and grind; certainly leaving me without reverse and first... maybe worse. The car is home now (towed) and I'm trying to work out what to do next. I have a 12 month dealer warranty which should contribute to the repair somehow, although I'm not sure the extent as I wasn't able to catch them during business hours and I haven't had the fine print translated into English yet

The car had done 117K and as I didn't get any history - it was my intention to give it a full 100K service anyway. I was looking at throwing some money into it, just not this soon

Providing I can call the shots (re: Warranty), I'm looking for a mechanic as close to inner Melbourne as possible that I can limp my zed to (I'm in St. Kilda East) - Preferably someone who has experience with jap imports. While I can get my way through a basic service, I'm not very mechanically minded with an XF Falcon, let alone a high performance ZX!

    Any recommendations would be appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Drew

P.S. I know this might be the perfect time to convert to manual, but I've actually grown fond of the auto quickly as I do a lot of city driving (i.e. I'm lazy :p)

i dont think they will cover a manual conversion under warranty. i think they will only give you a replacement tranny to put in.. and i dont think the replacement covers labor..

joe @ dontex (vermont) is the VIC specialist..

i hear that bryan at brytech(geelong) is also a really good zed mechanic.

but most transmission places will be able to replace the auto box as pretty much all cars are the same gearbox-->engine wise (bolt up)

You have a warrantee dude. They should fix it with a fresh rebuild ASAP.

Dont panic till it becomes a problem.

If they refuse thats what VCAT is for. Put in a claim and fight it out. You will get all the cash back.

    Ditto..

    ..to what Graham just said.
I had a Beef with Frankston Mitsubishi once (They are no more, surprise surprise!!) and as soon as I got a hearing date and they were notified, they backed off and paid a full refund!

some good advice above .... sounds like "shonky motors" to me ....

... i would be hitting them, under your warranty, for a full purchase price refund, if possible.
... such a major problem in such a short period sounds like a heap of ongoing, further problems ... and one to get out of, asap, if you can ...

    Thanks for the tips guys,

Yeah I got burnt on this one. Fell in love with the car a little too quickly :zlove:

My warranty covers up to $500 worth of repairs to the tranny (not much of a warranty after all.) I'm guessing that won't even cover the labour, but every bit helps. Shonky Bros. Cars have been less than accommodating as you can imagine.

bugger-all I can do about it now. I guess I have to try to laugh and learn something from the situation. I just want my zed back on the road! :p

    Cheers,
    Drew

Sorry, You have a statutory warrantee for 3 months if it came from a car yard. The warrantee you are talking about is the extended warrantee.

This can and will be fixed. You just have to push.

If they wont fix it, Tell them you are going to put in a VCAT claim. See what happens then.

Thanks but I don't think I am covered by a stat waranty due to the age of the car.

For a vehicle to be covered by Statutory Warranty the Motor Car Traders Act states that it must:

    (a) Have been manufactured not more than 10 years before the date it is sold;

    and

    (b) Has been driven for less than 160,000 kilometres.

    Cheers though :)

Lets just say be cautious of certain large used car dealers in Bayswater ;)

Apparently the car was checked over 'top to bottom' before the sale by a 'great mechanic'... who unfortunately moved to Perth recently and is no longer contactable. Go figure.

    Cheers

Just lodge a VCAT claim NOW. Maybe that will rattle their cage enough to do something.

Good point Tektrader, at worst it could make them think twice before selling the next poor bugger a lemon! I've given VCAT a buzz and they reckon I have a chance. Let's see what happens!

    :)

    Cheers again fellas
