Take the fascia off around the stereo. Then unplug the cable and undo two screws. Done.

Ah yeah i forgot you were doing these fixes.

I looked into fixing them too, as the one in the blue zed was fried. Used to be intermittent then nothing. I did the usual resister swap. Worked for maybe 25 second. Then stopped. Pieced together a fix list of components but thats where i stopped. Bought another working one from mmarschall.

$25 for a fix of a failed/failing clock is by far the cheapest fix there is for a zed. To the non payer. Stop being so tight!

I commend your work. Its a job that many have pondered over the years but never actually succeeded. Good stuff :zlove:

I also have a problem with my z32 clock. Since I'm an electronic technician i thought i have a go at it. (as if there was an alternative :D)

    Problem:
It worked but display was intermittent. if u tap it few times it comes up for few seconds than dims down to off. it kinda ticked me off so out it went.

Had a read about it in the tech section and few things made me smile but anyways.

just to give few pointers if not already known.

    Solution:
As per tech info and visual inspection , I've removed the 180R 1W SMD resistors were very dry jointed, seems bit of heat associated with them hence the dry joints and intermittent connection.

Cleaned the pads (be very careful, also fluxed cleaned the pads they had very dry corroded solder). checked the resistance of the resistors to match their printed value.

Resistors tend to go open circuit and can be easily check with multimeter. if readings are within 10% its fine to reuse.no need to replace Resistors are fairly robust if correct rating used.

I've noticed on the tech side using 1/2W Through hole resistors which is incorrect.
The SMD resistors are 1W (clearly labeled on the circuit board) that will explain why only some of the repairs worked for short time as probably those resistor fried.

Need at least 1W resistors if u got access to higher rating ones fit them in. They are SMD (surface mount) and use the PCB as heat transfer as a secondary function.
Fitting through hole 1/2w hanging in the air resistors is asking for trouble. need at least 1W to 1.5W to be safe if going through hole (leaded).

Also cleaned all the pads with desoldering wick cleaned with flux cleaner and than re-soldered every pad. Quicker than checking every pad and component.

    Surprise (not really) it works.:D

Time wise about 25 to 30min for a person that knows what they doing.

So the price of $25 that Zcar91 is charging is fairly good. Especially if components need changing.

Electrolytic capacitors have a life of around 10 years. Most Z are close to 20. These can be replaced with equivalent (more exy, and harder to obtain to general public) tantalum capacitors for trouble free future.

If the VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display) is burnt just bin it unless u have one with the stuffed chip than swap the screens.

Im going to look at when i get time to replace it with LCD style clock. but for time being i got a clock :zlove:

PS: I think Nissan did this to all their Z cars. All previous Z had dodgey clocks some from factory.must be in the genes or design criteria

    happy :br:

gday. this is my first time on so hello to all the Z's out there. My clock is also busted and had my electronic enginneer son fix it, NOT. He replaced the 2 180 ohm resistors, but no effect. Wondering if Zcar91 would have a look at it and get it going?

    Thanks

Mods - Can we set this up as a permanent reference point somewhere? Tech section maybe? Sounds like you have a job for life, Zcar91.
P.s. Mine's OK at present but it can only be a matter of time and I'd like to think I can still find you when the time comes.

Sorry for the full PM box..>>

    Hi All,

I'm not a regular visitor to the forum and my PM box got unexpectedly full. To save a lot of messaging here is my postal address with some instructions:

    a) Address

    John Garvin
    157 Duffy Street
    AINSLIE ACT 2602

    b) Send your clock by registered mail. It's not expensive and it is a guarantee of arrival.

    c) I will examine the clock soon after arrival and advise of my diagnosis to the owner by PM. If you have a clock that has been tampered (i.e. not in original condition) then don't bother sending it to me as it is probably stuffed.

    d) After repair I will return to sender by registered mail.

Unfortunately, the price has slightly increased from $25/clock to $30/clock and payment required in advance by Postal Order due to me returning clocks to someone who "forget" to pay after receiving the clocks.

If I cannot repair the clock then I will return the clock to sender less cost of postage. Oh...Will the sender please leave clear instructions for the return address.

    Cheers
