Damn, at least it's winter. Just driving along then just started making a hell of a rattling noise. Wonder if I've just lost gas or whether the compressors stuffed. Anyone had similar noises. Noise goes away when you turn off the A/C. Also, how the hell do you get the compressor out? Don't want to pull the engine yet. Please don't tell me you have to pull the engine.
You can get the compressor out the bottom but the system must be degassed first. If it is just clutch/ clutch bearing failure, that can be replaced without removing the compressor from the car.
If it's the clutch bearing, it make the noise all the time wouldn't it? Noise is only when the clutch is engaged (A/C=on). Not sure if it's a bearing noise or not, sought of is but is real rattley , like maybe the raceway is really worn. if that makes sense.
There are 2 bearing in the clutch assembly. One for the pulley, the other for the clutch hub. Pulley bearing will make noise always if it fails, clutch bearing will only make noise when engaged.
Maybe not as bad as what it sounds then. Can you get to the clutch hub bearing without removing the compressor? Most likley will make an offering to ZX Gods and pay someone to do it cause too much stuffing around with the gasing etc.
Compressor needs to be removed from its mount but not from the car. If you need it done, give me a call to book it in.
