Just thought I'd share this info with everyone!

I've recently sold a set of rims to a guy in the US & he has put me onto this company for shipping between the US & Oz! ;)

Basically they send cars in containers & sell off the remaining space within the container for various parts etc!

They price per item rather than by weight or cubic volume etc!

Obviously it's a slow process as you have to wait on the next container to be shipped to your port!........but thought it was worth bringing their service to the attention of the forum! ;)

They are based in Brisbane (car imports) but Glen is the parts manager responsible for filling up the space in the containers & he is based here in Melbourne!

Here is some info Glen sent to me after meeting him in person today!

    "G'day Russell,

    Great to meet you today.
Here is the cover letter I provide new clients.
Keep it handy if you want to forward it onto others who are looking for their Nissan parts from the states.

    Cheers Glen.

    G'day ,

Here is the follow up email we were talking about on the phone on how we handle shipping items to Australia.

this is great... been keeping my eye on some big subs over form the states.. this means i can get them here dirt cheap rather then paying
$150 postage each to be shipped here...

    Downside to container shipping....

The downside to anything brought in by container is that ALL contents of the container get hit with GST, & if it's not made in the US you'll get whacked duty as well

Really only an option for big, expensive items.

Yeah this is true! - but could be good for things like Kaminari stuff that is made in the US & is quite bulky!

Plus even with GST (& duty?) factored in - shipping on a set of rims for example could still work out to be cheaper than say $500 like Martin had to pay! - worth getting a quote to compare regardless! ;)

    Very true Russ ...
Say you're looking at a set of rims at US$1210.
    Add US$100 for freight = US$1310 total.
5% duty on the wheels (assuming rims not made in USA) = US$60.50.
    10% GST on the total = US$137.05.
Sub total cost of charges is US$297.55 is approx A$334 at US$ rate of 89c.

Yes, I'm looking at a set of new rims, need to get that job first!

    Not worth the hassle....

$335 by container (which could take months), and that's not taking into consideration any extra charges they can throw at you (import licence fee, quarantine, etc) ... then you still have to pick them up or pay delivery to your place

$500 delivered to your door in 6-10 days looks the goods to me :D

Need to get someone working on the docks to pass this stuff to one of the aus300zx blokes to bypass all that extra charge stuff :p

Good point!........but for those where time is not an issue this still could prove an economical option?........l just thought these guys were worth bringing to the forum's attention! - worth a call to see what they can or can't do for ya if you're looking to bring some stuff over! I know it would save the TwinZ Rear Bumper guys a fortune compared to $675 per bar!:eek::eek:

    Container shipping has its uses....

As I said before, for big bulky or extremely heavy items... container shipping is the go because the weight or cubic dimensions of such items will crucify you on air freight.

If you are looking at something under a cubic metre that doesn't weigh a hundred kilos AND purchase price is under $1K then USPS/Courier is the go because the savings on gst/duty goes a LONG way toward offsetting the additional shipping costs. And the added bonus of having it delivered right to your door in under 10 days more than outweighs the few dollars extra it might cost by air freight (IMHO)
