I just bought a ratchet spanner set at Aldi's for $25 (I think).

    It has 6 ring (ratchet end)/open ended spanners of 8,10,11,13,14 & 17mm size (pity there's no 12mm).

They're chrome vanadium and look very sturdy (time will tell), but the bit I liked was the 72 teeth ratchet. This means you only have to rotate the spanner a fraction to engage the next ratchet (a handy feature for zed owners )

At the price I thought it was worth a punt. I'm not expecting the ratchet mechanism to stand up to torqueing down a set of cylinder heads, but they'll come in handy for threading up those PITA nuts and bolts that exist in the bowels of the zed engine bay.

Anyway..... Buy/Don't buy, it's up to you. I just thought I'd give you a "heads up" because Aldi's have a habit of doing "one off" deals on this sort of thing (once they're gone they're gone)

Wow, that's pretty cheap  I've never seen a cheap set last too well.

I love my Kinchrome set though :zlove: Money well spent :D

Whats the chances you can upload an image of them.

Like you, for $25 its worth just trying out. Gotta win sometimes with cheap stuff...maybe...

If looking ok ill have to get one of you blokes to get me a set.

SA is the ass for anything reasonable, like Aldi.

    Here you go......

Not a real good pic but the batteries just went flat so that's all you're gonna get :D

They should last if you realise their limitations. If I just use them to thread the nut/bolt and then use a "real" ring spanner to wring its neck, they should be sweet.

Damn.. for that price they are almost disposable... How big is the head? My kincrome spanners are quite thin on the ring end, really good. Most of the cheapies I have seen are bulky.

Flex-head ratchet spanners are even better. When I bought my flex head kincrome ones, the Ebay seller also sent me a set of fixzed ratchets like these. I was stoked.

i reckon my whole tool kit is worth $100. good old bunnings and supercheap auto, that said working o teh zed had resulted in the replacement of a 14mm spanner, and two ratchets. :)

    On the contrary...
Once you have used and own good tools, you will never see a mechanic again. I only go to mine once a year for the pink slip. He knows it's in good condition

The exotic tools only help you get the job done quicker though...
    Things like:
    crows foot sockets,
    Flex head ratchets
    Impact sockets
    magnetic pickups
    scribe set / picks (invaluable)
    Offset ring spanners
    Good multimeter with good fittings

I like to DIY though, and have a daily drive and a weekend warrior... so taking my time for the satisfaction of a good job is worth it. Not everyone is in the same boat though (work too much, family commitments, not enough time, too much money ;-) )

No 12mm? What were they thinking? Has anyone ever seen an 11mm nut? 13mm i can understand since it can loosely fit over a 1/2".... but the makers of this set must never have seen a Japanese car before if they left out the 12!
