I'd like to kick the person who wired the ECU in the teeth - what a pain. Rewired it all today and tested, car starts etc... which means its all working and its much neater. Heatshrink all around, no bullet connectors and I found some connections that weren't actually shielded at all and intermittently shorted against the chassis.. God... Anyway, injectors are on their way so hopefully a resolution soon. Cheers Sean
If you are taking the top of the engine off, i would consider doing the timing belt and seals, depending on when/if was done.
Yep, doing the 200k km service at the same time Next Wednesday should see me *hopefully* driving the car again Sean
Do I get a prize for stuck injector post :bash: Lets hope the cylinder is still good after running lean for so long. Might pay to do a compression test. The MT8 is probably set up to batch fire the injectors and coil packs. It doesnt have enough drivers to fire all 6 injectors or coil packs. Would work OK but isnt too great for fuel economy. Thats why the MT12s is a better option cause it can sequentially fire the injectors. and has 6 coil pack drivers
Well if there was no fuel getting in then there wouldn't be combustion at all = not running lean. That is the best case scenario, but pretty sure thats where I'm at. Waiting on parts then on Monday we'll find out! Oh and your prize is a thanks Sean
Yeah, the service is still in progress. Was hoping to get it back before Xmas but I'm not rushing Rob as I'd rather the job got done right, not quick. So far - EGR removed and blanked off Vac/fuel/various lines replaced as necessary Injectors swapped over To do - Put it back together Check and retune as necessary Diff/Gearbox oils etc.. Deadline is 1 Jan '10 as I need to prep it for rego. Will keep you all updated, cheers for keeping an eye on it. Sean P.S - Zarb, I went to College with you aha!
Since the car was last regoed in NSW, you dont have a time limit on when the car needs to be transfered. (it can be years, no extra fees) I perfer to buy cars from NSW for this reasion. both my zeds were bought from interstate.
Update: Seems cyl 6 has decided to drop compression to <80 dry, hardly changed during a wet test. Now - what the sh!t do I do? I'm about to drive (push?) this thing off Black Mountain. None of my 200k km service kit has been put on the engine yet, nor any other parts I've bought. As far as I can see these are my options: -Put it together the way it is and drive it -Halfcut + sell the extra's I don't need -Rebuild (rings, bearings, gaskets etc..) and hope it isn't a blown ring land/valve Financially the last two will be a long stretch.. Sigh Sean
A search of posts relating to troublesome symptoms in No.6 cylinder, will reveal that No.6 runs hotter(and leaner)than any of the other five cylinders. This is largely due to it being further from the throttle bodies than other cylinders(check posts by JP from UAS). This condition will ultimately lead to excessive wear to components in that cylinder(JP opened-up a blanked off waterway in that area to help in reducing temperature in No.6). I would be inclined to proceed with your Plenum pull and remove the offending cylinder head for valve inspection. If the valves are all good, then the piston/rings are the next most likely cause of the low compression. If you feel lucky, you could drop the sump, remove No.6 big end, conrod and piston for inspection of the cylinder and those components. If you feel really lucky, you could overhaul that cylinder(and associated components)and re-install same. You may get away with it(others have in the past, some have not). The choice is yours, good luck.:zlove:
If it hardly changed with a dry/wet test then it is likely to be a valve not rings. Pull the one head off and have a look. Seeing its number 6 you will even be able to do it in the car without an engine pull. Pull it out with the manifold and the turbo still attached
So within a few weeks, the compression has dropped from 110 to 80?! . That's insane how fast this engine has deteriorated within a month or two..I guess when I had the car it was on its last breath . I think a long motor might be the best idea, or half cut if it isn't that much more expensive. You could reuse the turbos / manifolds and anything else currently connected to the engine if you find a good long motor.
Yeah and thats with VERY minimal driving too I'm starting to think parting the car out is the best financial option I have and getting a new one.. Will see if I can pull the head on RHS bank tomorrow
