These replacement gases are no where near as efficent as old R12. I rememeber a heap of articles about this back when they obsoleted freon.

Lost of people complaining the new gasses didnt work as good and didnt get as cold.

OS12 Superchill is the new version to the R12 systems. Not necessary to replace the oil in the pump either. But its a good faith thing, do it right the first time.

If your system has a leak, generally the receiver/dryer is replaced - generic units at trade price is between $10-30. If orings are needing replacement, only worth cents... If hoses, big bucks, a crimp fitting is also between $40-90 each fitting, and whatever extra the hose is.

Im just so glad we have A/C techs here at work. Free-ish. How much is a carton these days? heh

We diagnosed my problem by actually attempting to regas the system. Any other shop would have charged you for the gas usage.

Ps, Estimated per 1L os12 is around $45.

A cars system can take between a few hundred grams to just over the liter mark. So keep this in mind as to how much places are slogging you alone for the gas. Tech time should be at a standard-ish going rate. Takes between 15-30mins to regas. Depending on how much of the old gas is in there system and or how much work they need to do.

Renae, i'd be surprised if you need anything more then a new Receiver/dryer, and a few orings. Maybe the pressure relief valve near the pump too (seems a common issue of late for many - this can be welded shut) Ive not seen a zed yet with mass pitting of the steel lines to the point its leaking, and also the hoses. None as of yet. But every car is different. Just be stringent with what the shop is trying to sell you.

Ill get some part numbers and prices for the common components for a zed and post up for you. May as well use my advantages where plausible. Will get back to you soon.

What year is yours? NA iirc?
n.m i found it on your profile, 89 NA Auto.

Well that lasted a whole 3 days :mad:...ringing them up now, to see what the hell is wrong with it!

Well I gotta drop it off at 7am tomorrow morning for them to have a look at it again...I have a feeling it DOES have holes ALL through the system..like the first guy had told me...

Just a question, they had my car for not even 3 hours and they said they replaced some O-rings...my question is, what O-rings could they have replaced? Where would these be located:confused:, as I want to get them to show me where they had replaced them...

And, is there any way the system could just randomly get holes over 3 days? Cause if they say that it does have more holes..I'm seriously going to crack it

The o-rings are at every screwed joint in the system.

There are 2 at the fire wall near the batter

    Two on the compressor

    Two on the radiator thing

Two on the condenser tube thing behind the front bar

I think that is right, might be some more. Some of them are quite awkward to do, but I'm sure they would be able to do it reasonably quick. I don't see why the didn't put some of that fluro dye in it so they could check for leaks with a uv light.

Well they said they did the dye test and said that a couple of O-rings needed replacing...and they said they fixed that...so, why now is it still leaking?? I hope they don't expect me to pay them for bringing it back to them, for a job they said they had fixed!

They could of over gassed the system which does happen when people dont watch what they are doing while filling the aircon system or an o ring was pinched and they didnt drouble check which also happens...

I know when fitting aircon systems to cars some people tend to not lube the o ring and that can result in a pinched o ring which totally sucks!

That's all pretty common stuff that a air con workshop shouldn't have hassles with... May even be a leak within the cabin.

Yes it is common but most dont check... I dont know if you have filled an aircon system before but on the gauges it tells you everything you need to know... If one dont drop to a point then you know something is wrong with the system...

Righto..just got the call back and the guy says I need a new compressor! Shouldn't they have known that it was F@$KING broken the first time when they did the dye test!!!!

He says I'm looking at $1325 in total to get the compressor sent off to Melb and rebuilt and for them to reinstall the whole thing and re-gas the system again.

PLEASE HELP ME WITH YOUR OPINIONS...I said I would pick it up, and have a think about it. Am I able to do this myself?

Fkn hell ....pick it up and say your going elsewhere for a second opinion and see what they say...thats bullshit, it worked fine for 3 days why would the compressor randomly die within those 3 days? I don't think they've done a thorough job at all, more like do a quick leak test, fix the first major leak they find and regas it and send her on her way all the while its still got small leaks which took 3 days to dissipate all the gas.

I think we will be taking it somewhere else, who in Melbourne is a reputable aircon servicer? One that plenty of people on here have been to with no problems and good service?

    Cheers!

    Craig

PS. I reckon I've seen this at other places where they do a quick little fix, say its all good and send you on your way all happy...few days later a bigger problem crops up and your back for a big spend up, makes me wonder whether they have actually sabotaged the system

You can change the compressor yourself (*cough*Craig can*cough*) easy enough.

How do they know it's the compressor, is it not kicking in? And it shouldn't cost that much, pretty sure a mate of mine had it done in his R23GTR for $600ish, and it wouldn't surprise me if it's the same compressor.

Yeah I had a quick talk to Craig about it..thinking about sending the compressor off to Melb myself and getting it rebuilt..I asked the guy how much it would cost and he said around the $690 mark to get it rebuilt..

Saw in the tech section that someone had done it themself, and that the radiator and fan need to be removed to get to it.

I'm not sure why it is the compressor, the guy just said it was..maybe I need to send Craig over there and get him to talk to the guy..

If its been siting there for years not used and then got pressed back into service maybe it did just die.

Talk to AAZN he had an air con compressor off his NA. BTW TT compressors and NA compressors are different.

ive had a similar thing with one of my commadores , the compressor leaks , the uv light shows the dye all around the pully , a common thing on older compressors apparantly. my gas leaks out after approx 1 month of use.

That sucks. First of all, I would suggest, even though it is annoying and difficult for you guys, that you get your car down to Joe at Dontex. Maybe organise a time to stay in Melb for a few days so he can check over your car. He did my aircon system about 2 years ago now, and it has been faultless ever since... something to consider, or else, get another opinion from another aircon specialist in your area...

In regards to the aircon compressor, a new unit is very expensive. Your alternatives is to either buy new (over $1K easily) or get a second hand one off a forum member. I got a 2nd hand one about 5 years ago, and its been fine ever since. It cost me $250. It can make some noise sometimes, but most aircon compressors will make a noticeable noise when they are in operation.
