Auto Vs Manual - who has driven both?

    kirst Totally Innocent

there may be a possibility that my sanity has slightly gone walkies and i am toying with the idea of getting another zed...

prices seem to be shitloads cheaper than when i sold mine but i am finding it hard to get out of the 'manual TT only' way of thinking...

so who has driven a manual and an auto TT and how do they compare? and not just a quick wizz around the block testdrive at a caryard, but actually driven one in traffic, and out on the hwy etc

Dan test drove an auto when we first started looking at zed's years ago and said he felt it was crap, but that was just a round the block spin and i cant even remember if it was TT or not, and at the time i didnt get behind the wheel
I know when he sat in the manual TT and we went a whole 200m he was impressed, but then who wouldnt be...

on the plus side i see the autos as less of a temptation to drop second...
but how do you find they downshift when accelerating? and whats the cruise rpm at 100 or so?
and whats the wear and tear like with an auto? and can you really feel it coming on boost?

the only turbo car i have ever driven that was auto was a s13 years ago, and that was interesting in the way that it felt you didnt have control over the gearbox changes, and kinda felt like it would be too easy to bury your foot and lose it due to no feel

    rockchucker WTF???

Personally I will never buy an Auto again after tearing into one. The TT Auto has a few more bits to pull apart. I like having a clutch. Sure "You can't shift faster than an Automatic" this is very true. There is nothing like a manual transmission though. Being able to drop a gear into the corner and keep on it all the way through. It is more of a personal preference though. If you want a daily driver to get back and forth to work in horrible traffic then the Auto is the way to go but why would you be DD a Z to work in horrible traffic?

So my vote is for the Manual Transmission all the way.

    I agree with rockchucker.....

Get a manual, you won't regret it.

I've lost count of the number of forum members who've done an auto/manual conversion, but I can only remember ONE case of a manual/auto conversion

If you need a DD then buy a $2K auto Ford/Holden and save the zed for the weekends.

Note : The auto zed will rev much lower than a manual at the same speed because overdrive on the auto is so long it is off the map.

when i bought mine it had to be a TT 5speed, nothing else, but having driven dozens of autos over the past year, some of them quick ones too i would actually buy one, i wouldnt change my manual for one obviously but if im in the market for another zed it will be a TT auto.

    Pro's
Easier to drive slowly/calmly i think
    Traffic no problem.
Easier for the missus to drive
a real quick one will light up first gear, shift to 2nd and light 2nd up too, alot of fun.

    Cons
    Auto shifter looks gay
auto boxes are getting to the age of needing overhauling, very expensive
More electronics, wiring lights etc, in an already complex car.
    smaller cams and turbo's

Agree completely. I owned an auto for about 6 years. Currently I've been driving around in a 5 speed for the last 4 years or so. My auto needed a rebuild which cost me the same as a new 5sp and caused a lot of grief getting fixed properly. The manual is much more fun.

I like changing gears and seeing how smoothly I can drive in traffic. With a nice organic clutch it's no harder than driving any other manual.

The super up side is that when I want to go hard nothing beats the manual, auto's may be faster at the drags, but I've never taken mine there and never intend to. My car is for driving on the streets with occaisional track days.

When I had the auto I'd have people admiring the car and then look surprised and say 'Oh is it an auto?". The auo selector is the worst part of the Zed interior - it looks worse than gay.

Just my thoughts, but having driven 1000's of k's in both varieties the manual wins easily.

    Manual FTW...

Stick with a Manual...especially if you're getting another TT. You'll soon get bored of an Auto and personally, if you buy a sports car it should be in manual.

Also there seems to be more reports of people having problems with the Auto boxes, especially at this age. You very rarely hear of any problems coming from the manuals. So in terms of reliability, I think manual is the way to go also.

I would never trade a manual Zed for an auto, even if it was a daily driver.

    But that's just me... :)

    Cheers
    Rob.

    same look...

Yeah, it's the same identical look that's given when someone asks you if it's a Twin Turbo and you answer "No".

A little piece inside both of you die at that exact moment...

as you know kirst, ive driven my car in both auto and manual with the same amount of power, and the manual is considerably more fun to drive.....
i also am aware that you like to drive your cars a little bit closer to the edge than most people, and imho you have more control over a manual trans car at that point than a equivelant auto.....
that being siad there are people out there that make a equally convincing argument for going auto, lysergic over here in wa and pex in the east spring to mind lol....

Although i changed mine to an manual. I dont mind either, if i could keep the auto with the new engine i probably would have.

If you want a DD/Boulevard Cruiser that will be mostly driven in peak hour, bumper to bumper traffic, then get an auto and you'll never regret it.

BUT, if "wind in the hair", "balls'n'all" sheer enjoyment is your bag, then there is no alternative other than to drive a Manual TT.

BOTH have their place, you just need to work out what your priorities are.

I found the auto more predictable than the manual. But that doesn't mean it did what you wanted it to.

driven both, if you want the best driving experience get the manual. zed manuals feel much better than any other car in its price range. very precise and great feel, if u get a short shifter it's even better.

i've driven TT manuals with less power than some of the TT autos i've driven, the manual cars always felt faster.

silvia manuals aren't anything special, very vague and long throw compared to a zed.

Manual Vs Auto with Shift at Will

If the Auto had the semi auto mod install giving paddle shift, what would the people who prefer manual say then?

Until Jaws takes one of my legs I'll be driving manuals... regardless of how much quicker, smarter, fuel efficient the modern automatic transmission is. They cannot be beaten for driver involvement.... and on a public road the object is to feel fast not necessarily to be fast. Throw in the fact that the stock Zed tranny is none of the above, and a cog down on the manual just seals the deal for me.

Manual or Auto ... 3rd option is shift-at-will

The manual or automatic gearbox debate often comes down to a personal preference rather than analysis. For me personally the automatic with the Shift-At-Will f1-style paddles provides the best of both worlds. For traffic and long highway driving the automatic mode is a god-sent, but for the twisty road the manual mode is excellent. Coming down into a tight hairpin corner, down paddle flipping through the gears, swinging through the corner, straightening up, then up shifting through the gears... the best of both worlds.

there cheap because there now 19 years old and the guys that buy them dont have the money to fix them ..

stick with your silvia or.. buy a late model Z... im not spending countless weekends fixing your cars anymore to only have you sell them off and dissapear from the planet !

if you buy a 6k zed . you will have to spend at least 5k fixing it if not more .

    silvia parts are cheap,
    silvia parts are everywhere
silvia parts are easy to fit

anyways isnt the silvia dans car?????

buy a 95+ zed or dont complain when your new 6k zed doesnt run properly !
