my car's aircon doesnt work at all....just blasts random ambient air out of the windscreen vents. I've heard that it's the compressor that's seized...and probably other things too.

I would like aircon back though

Mine's a valve that probably costs $5 to manufacture, Nissan want $450 for one, and a full days work to pull the dash apart to replace it.
Lucky I have sourced a good 2nd hand unit.
Now I just need enough spare time to fix it :)

Hmm...the dash removal isn't for the compressor though is it?
I'm guessing the air-con compressor is a big job. Not worth the money for the moment, got more deadly things to fix in the car.

NO, Greg is talking about his 'condenser' - different from his 'compressor'.
Condensor is located in dash in front of heater core on pass side. - big job, due to having to remove the dash to get to the bastard!

Replaceing the 'compressor' however isn't as bad. just remove belts, unbolt plumbing, undo mounting bolts and it's out.

    are you sure

I thought the core in the dash was an "evaporator" where the compressed ac gas evaporates quickly to create the cooling effect, and the "condensor was in the front bar, cylindrical/caniser looking thing with a sight glass?

    Correct.
    Evaporator unit.
It also contains the suction valve and the thermal expansion valve, of which the latter is faulty in mine.

Since there is no controlled expansion of the refrigerant, I get no cooling at all :)

Can they fail slowly or is it working or not working? Just wondering if I have the same prob, how did you diagnose yours Greg?

Failed gradually over a fortnight or so.
    Diagnosed by 2 technicians.
They connect their gear (gauges). They can apparently tell by the behaviour of the 2 gauges during operation of the A/C where faults are most likely to be.

Yep, thanks Maxy. Evaporator in the dash - not the condensor (my mixup) :bash:
sometimes i get my components mixed up after a few beers. lol

    Gas was low

    Got it re-gassed.
    1. could have a leak
    2. he said very hard to find the leaks on these cars
    3. compressor has an over pressure valve that release some gas if it gets over about 450 psi. This could have caused the low volume. We also discussed the fans, looks like a new cluch on the fan would help and he also thinks I should have the stock thermo wired to come on with the ac.

From what I understood the stock thermo on the jspec is only for when the coolant overheats not connected to the AC, am I right? Perhaps on the aus spec the thermo is also hooked up to the ac.

BTW it's nice and cold now but was working hard on the way back to work, 33 deg ambient.:eek::eek:

Maybe but im only looking for stock factory stuff simon. Currently my aircon system works perfect, but if they upgrade the gas to be more enviromently frendily or less wear on the aircon system then i might see if its worth converting over but if i dont who knows might have to go hychill one day.

Don't know, same stuff he put in 2 years ago I'm guessing.

Can anyone shed light on the thermo question?

Max, My Z is currently in getting the air/con sorted out. I get it back tomorrow.
I'll let you know if/how happy I am, and then pass on the details if the guy is OK.

The Aircon temp at the vents in the Ssangyong is 6 degs
in the Z it was never that cold, but was satisfactory until it stopped working.

    All shall be revealed tomorrow.
