Hey Guys, Just installed my new 40mm radiator from JustJap today and for some strange reason the AC "outside" temp is showing 61 degrees after a couple of loops of the neighbourhood. *** Note - I am using an Electric fan as was used on my stock rad without too many problems *** ConZult showed that the coolant temps were sitting at 92 degrees after the run and after sitting at idle for a couple of minutes they dropped back to 85 degrees and were fairly stable. I've checked that she is not dropping any fluids and the radiator is topped up with new coolant. I had it on a slope when filling to avoid air pockets however I can't rule that out 100%. What's got me worried at the moment is that the inter cooler (big front mount) is incredibly hot. Barely touchable for more then a few seconds which is probably the reason the "outside" temp is so high. Today is supposedly really hot but I've been in the garage and cant really tell as I'm hot anyway Does anyone have any ideas? I can grab photos of whatever you need photos of and if anyone wants to pop down and take a look feel free, Im here all night Thanks in advance, Tontsekz.
There is a bleeder plug at the top left of the radiator to bleed air out of the system. Check the radiator fluid level before you start the car for a few days. You might lose some into the overflow bottle until it settles to a happy level too. If you are not leaking anything, just keep topping it up until it stays full.
I decided to go get some photos taken. Sorry for the crappy quality. I was using an iPhone To keep the thread littleband friendly I'll just link the images. http://z32project.com/photos/displayimage.php?album=7&pos=0 http://z32project.com/photos/displayimage.php?album=7&pos=1 http://z32project.com/photos/displayimage.php?album=7&pos=3 http://z32project.com/photos/displayimage.php?album=7&pos=4 http://z32project.com/photos/displayimage.php?album=7&pos=5
I went down and put about 200ml of water in which topped it off again. I'll go for another run shortly and see how I go.
Did your symptoms begin to manifest only after the installation of your new radiator? What kind of condition is your thermostat in? Opens too late / doesn't open perhaps? -Kirill
Thermostat seems to be opening as the radiator is quite hot. Just went for another run and it took roughly 15 minutes of normal driving in ~28 degree temps before coolant temps hit 108 degrees and "outside" temp hit 50 degrees. I have a feeling that this radiator just doesn't cut it.
Just Jap are pretty good to deal with... let them know the product is not acceptable and they should give a refund. Though, still could be air in the system... some folks have had all sorts of drama with air pockets on their Z's.
I put a low water level sensor in that bung on the top of the radiator & when it starts up the alarm goes off for the first block. It seems like it will always have an air pocket up there, unless mine has a tiny leak.Went 50k today at 100k an hr & standard radiator overheated but the alarm didn't go off.I was about to buy a big radiator but will pressure test first & get timing checked.
hi mate just thought i would let you know i had a very similar problem with my zed about 2 weeks ago, it ended up being a large air pocket (took about 2L of coolant to fill) i just kept on topping it up over a period of about 5 days, and now its running awesome. i know thins might not be your problem but just thought i would help if i could
Ummm... I may have solved the problem. I remembered only moments ago that when I installed the electric fan I had to reverse the polarity so it would pull air instead of push. Basically it was forcing hot air into where the intercooler is causing the "outside" temps to read insane levels. I'll let her cool down a bit and take her for another drive. Thanks everybody for the help and I'll let you know how i go
Well, that's fixed it After giving her a "spirited" drive around the block 5 times her temps were sitting around 89 degrees. After sitting still for 60 seconds she dropped to 84 degrees. Thanks everybody for your advice and I'll take my dumb@$$ of the month award now :bash:
Strange...my car's coolant temp is stable when the car is driving and goes up when I stop. Something to do with heat soak vs your new electric fan? Or maybe I'm just running mercury in my cooling system..
Just bite the bullet and reinstall a rodded stock radiator, shroud and clutch fan and all your troubles will be over. OK, am being a smartass but you know how much a fan I am of stock equipment!!! PS: the outside air temp issue is the ambient temp sensor which lives on drivers side next to ac receiver/dryer bottle under the nose panel.
remember if you just changed the polarity from push to pull then you will need to change the blade direction too... unless its a cheap multi-directional one you will need to flip the blade too.
