no worries. alot of people were putting it down to the pugs though....me on the other hand....didnt have a clue lol
Good to see at least three people have had good results so far I wish all Zed fixes were so simple. As some one said this wont fix all smoky Zeds but hey it's well worth the shot, if ya spend your $100 or so on this and it doesn't work I recommend the next $100 should be spent on some quality spirits to drown your sorrows. Because any other smoke issue is likely to be really expensive.
Valve guides Yeah I am having the same problem, I have just rebuilt the whole motor, new turbos the lot, we are producing 272rwkw at 11lb boost, the only thing I did't do was replace the valve guide rubbers, so off comes the plenium... I'll let you know how I go. Does the smoke smell like fuel, also check if the oil smells like fuel as well, could also be a crook injector.
Smells mostly like Oil. And rebuilt the whole motor but didn't replace the valve seals...bad mistake lol
oil/fuel dripping out of down pipe I'M ANOTHER VICTIM OF THE DREADED SMOKE,BUT ITS FOULING THE LEFT BACK CYLINDER & DRIPPING OUT OF THE DOWN PIPE GASKET .JUST REBUILT THE ENGINE & NOW HAVE PULLED EXHAUST MANIFOLD & TURBO OFF.COULD THE TURBO LEAK ENOUGH OIL TO FOUL THE BACK PLUG? JUST CHECKED COMPRESSION AT 130 LBS & SAME ON OTHER POTS THAT ARE FIRING OK.tHE NEXT DELEMMA IS EITHER PUT IN ANOTHER TURBO OR KEEP GOING & PULL THE HEAD OFF & BACK PISTON OUT FOR OIL RING CHECK.WHAT FUN!THE OIL DOES SMELL FUNNY THOUGH .IF THE INJECTOR WAS CROOK COULD IT CAUSE ALL THIS DRAMA?
Is there a reasn why these balance tubes are getting put behind the cats? I read earlier in this thread someone suggest tat the pipe be placed as close to the turbos as possible? Any comments on WHY they are being installed after the cats? (bar SIM without them)
Thanks Benny So really there is no specific spot to put a balance pipe or specific reason why it should go before or after the cats? Just as long as it is there?
Thats where the factory balance pipe was fitted. That was the main reason. Yes i can see merit in having them before, however we have 3 fixes so far and I'm not going to look the gift horse in the mouth.
For sure Al you and others have had an awesome result in fitting it there Obviously tis is down to a balance issue, I was just wondering if there was a reason why you guys put it there and not before the cats as I couldn't see the difference. So about that spare turbo you have... Passenger side if I recall?
some more knowledge to impart sorry to bring this one back from the dead but I was very interested when going through this post and some interesting ideas were raised. I did some more research and got an opinion from a mechanical engineer / mechanic friend of mine who is specialising in the automotive sector and following is what he had to say. You also might want to read back through the whole post so that this makes a bit more sense Just thought someone might be interested The frequency he gave in his post is wrong, the correct frequency is 700 (idle speed) * 3 (number of cylinders into each exhaust on twin system) / 60 (number of seconds in a minute ) = 35 cycles per second, or 35Hz (which from memory is the number that you came up with). His theory also has another problem, it cant be the primary pressure waves that are causing this oil leakage because it doesn't matter (as much anyway) what the exhaust is like after the turbo, they are still going to receive the same 35 Hz cycle of low an high pressure waves that he is blaming for problem. If anything it would be to do with the reflected waves that develop as exhaust pulses leave the exhaust tip. This would also explain why some systems don't cause this problem, and others require a balance pipe to sort it. This is because a small change in the diameter, or length (or the fitment of a balance pipe which will completely change the behaviour of the system) of the exhaust will move the resonance frequency. If this is moved away from idle, problem will be sorted. The problem could also theoretically be sorted by changing to a different turbo seal, ie one that was more ridged, or weighed more ( this would raise the natural frequency of the seal to a point in the rpm range that was only passed by briefly when the engine was revved). I'm assuming being a musical type i don't need to explain resonance and natural frequency.
Thats some good info. I've spoken to some mechanics about it and they say it won't make a difference and that it would just spread the smoke across both exhausts. I had heavy smoke from both before the pipe, and now I get none...
The only people having these issues are the ones who reckoned Nissan didnt know what they where doing in the exhaust. The stock one had a balance pipe ( H pipe ) why would you mod the exhaust and leave any crossover pipe out. They didnt fit it stock cause it looked cool !!! Dont get the logic
totally understand where you are coming from there but then nissan were thinking about economy, usable power and drivability when they designed these cars. I dare say they didnt foward plan the design to the stage where keen modifiers were trying to take the machine to the next level. I think that there are some advantages to having a split non balanced exhaust system, although mostly asthetic / superficial , and if thats where you go with the project then its handy to know that a balance pipe isnt necesarily the only fix that will work.
It was noted very early on that I had stuffed the maths a touch and it was rectified in the tech section. It was never said that a balance pipe was the only fix only that it was worth a try and that it would most likely fix at least some cars. Hey seeing as your mate is so god damn cleaver why doesn't he try and explain the economic sense in changing turbo seals rather than fitting a balance pipe? In the future I will keep my trap shut when it comes to tech help and leave it to all the fricken experts who seem to know so much. The same experts who clearly could not help in the solving of the problem the first time round (this problem was posted some time ago?) reflected waves!? :stupid:
