Boost Solenoid Question - 1 or 2

Ok, I'm in a very annoyed mood because of a certain garage here in Perth, that will now need my Zed for a THIRD day, to install a boost controller and fuel controller, and tune it on their dyno. My question comes because of their latest excuse for the delay.

Is it true that some later Zeds have 2 boost solenoides as opposed to 1?

I've just been told that this is the case for my Zed, and it's the first time they've seen this configuration, and therefore the way they've installed my boost controller is wrong. They now need to wait for the engine to cool down, remove some heat shields, then re-install the controller... hence the third day required.

spewing man, yes the zed does have 2 boost controll solenoids mate, boost controller install take a hour max usually. unless they have disconnected the stock boost controll solenoids from the turbos themselves and not simply unplugging them... that sucks man.... who is doing the work? xspeed?

So was what they told me COMPLETELY true? That most Zeds only have a single boost control solenoid and that I've got some rare late model configuration? Or basically did they screw up the install and need more time?

Hmm... I'd rather not reveal the garage with whom I'm frustrated at their lack of service and integrity. At the same time for the sake of fellow zedders, I won't say that your guess is wrong.

yeah they all have 2.. should suggest that they call all their previous Z customers and fix theirs as well.

Don't get me started on that. Their original excuse to me this morning, as to why they couldn't get my car onto the dyno FIRST like they promised yesterday, was that they were "just sent new info from HKS USA this morning", that told them how to wire up ALL the features, and not JUST the power and ignition like they had been doing. Therefore they decided to spend the time, and re-wire my car properly.

I was supposed to be lucky as their 3 prior installs of this model EVC didn't have the wires for Rev and Throttle connected, so mine would be the first "tuned" properly.

If that's really the case, then there are a lot of really stupid people there, that are happy to drive around with a blank throttle display on their EVC.

In all honesty, why don't they just tell the truth, instead of making their own team look stupid, while at the same time thinking that the customer is stupid too.

If they said this is the first time they've seen 2 Boost Solenoids on a 300zx, they haven't seen a 300zx at all. They are probably thinking about all the inline engines they work on and don't realise the Zed's configuration is different. I.E. It has a V6. :)

You should try Cypher Industries if these rookies don't get it right in the end.

    Hope it all goes well.

    Cheers

All the dodgy work and excuses (certain) mechanics are using these days to bring in more revenue with Zed customers is sickening. A guy I met in Townsville only the other day bought his Zed from Melbourne a couple of weeks ago. Apart from being severly down on boost and the lifters making a noticeable tapping the engine runs fine. I offered to do a quick check over it for him and a look at things with datascan to give him a run down on how it was.

He took it to a mechanic yesterday for a service, he was going to ask them to fix the boost problem but I quickly advised him they would probably take a couple of hours (and charge him for it) just to figure out how the boost sytem works so I offered to fix it another day. Anyway, they said the lifter tapping sound was the timing belt geting ready to let go and they did not want to put it on their dyno cause they said the engine would let go. So they then proceeded to tell him they needed to take the timing belt off and find what was making the noise so he was looking at a minimum of $400. Heck he even drove it nearly 3000KM to Townsville without a hitch, how bad could it be?

Bloodly unreal hey. Unless the timing belt was starting to shred making nice lashing sounds on the covers, how the hell would they know it was about to let go. I assured this dude the engine was fine and I had heard a Zed before with a louder lifter noise than that. If only there was 1 Zed specialist in every part of Australia.

    WTF?

ok ..... please don't tell me that you took your car to xspeed!! (if you don't wanna publicly say it than please pm) but if you say they just got info from hks and knowing that xspeed are the only certified hks dealers or something then it must be them!?!?

if a mechanic installed a single solenoid thingy on a dual solenoid thingy like the z has what happens?

cause i've just been looking up the specs on all my mods (researching and reading forum as i've been told to do) and realised that a blitz spec s boost controller has been fitted to my car which is the entry level single solenoid model for street cars upto 1.5bar and from my understanding thats 18psi?

can anyone shed some light on this for me before i start pulling my hair out?????

1.5 Bar is 21.75566 PSI. Unless you want to run more boost than that it will be fine. The two boost supply hoses are joined into a T Piece and then the single hose runs to the boost control solenoid. Majority of electronic boost controllers have only one solenoid, like the AVCR that I use.

This workshop is learning at your expense

You are paying them to learn how to do their job...

I would get my car out of there asap and go find a local zedder who knows their stuff and get them to fit for you.

It really isn't such an ordeal IF you are familiar with z32's...

At the very least, I would strongly suggest that they not charge you for all the hours that they had no clue what they were doing.

I'm familiar with this sort of situation when I first started up zedcare. There were plenty of times when I wasn't 100% sure how to best tackle certain jobs .... and in those scenarios, I told the customer and didn't charge them.

Ethically, how could I? And if it is a larger job, I would usually suggest an alternative workshop who is more specialised in that area. I know I like to sleep at night with a clear conscience. I don't know how some of those rip-off workshops convince themselves its ok to do what they do to customers.

An honest workshop will NOT just bluff a customer and try to learn how to complete the job whilst charging the customer...

I run a computer tech business and operate the same way - sometimes normal procedures don't work and I have to spend a large amount of time learning new ways to do shit to fix someone's obscure problem (I avoid paving over with a new install where I can). 99% of the time I eventually find a fix, but I don't charge them for the time I took learning how to do it.

The ONLY time I will charge them for my full time is if it's a problem with multiple known fixes and I have to iterate through them to find one that works for that particular variation of the problem. If I just flat don't know/never encountered it before and need to learn and research from scratch, that's my problem and part of offering a service which is based on MY knowledge.

Holy shit, was searching stuff at the time I found this thread and never bothered to check the dates. In my defense it WAS 4:00 in the morning.

    Now I feel retarded.
