Yesterday got a call from police saying someone had tried to steal my car.... Security called the police after they saw someone climb into my car and get out after a few minutes. They didn't take anything but a few $ in coins, but the broke a number of items in the process. Before I go lodge an insurance claim, i just need a quick estimate in repairs, excess is 800$. Damage: Door scratches - no panel damage Drivers door lock broken ignition barrel broken off the column interior panels ripped off and broken. Car no longer starts - immobilizer possibly? I am 99% sure I will go thru insurance for it all. However there is something in the back of my mind saying it isn't a good idea due to how expensive and how hard parts are to buy, i am a little worried they will try write it off.
Insurance company will drag it out (if my experience is the norm). "We have to factor in the costs for a new part from Japan, labour cost and storage cost while waiting for the part to arrive" An estimate for thousands of dollars was adding up quickly. I was told that if I want to own an import, this is what I should expect. (Mine is an Auspec NA with history!!!) Luckily Eric supplied a part with a note stating it was a "brand new" part. So it depends whether existing parts on your car are repaired or replaced with new.
Just lodged the claim. I expect a iginition barrel to be 200-300, plus rekeying. paint work will be about 300. plus the extra screw around of the airbag model. the column surround is different to the non-airbag model. I think i made the right choice.
I wonder if the exact ignition barrel that was used on the Z32 way back 25 years ago is still being manufactured for low end models in the current lineup. Like a Nissan Micra? Then they can get you a new one without delaying everything. Hope it gets done quickly, post an update and the name of the insurer
As annoying as this must be, at least they didn't manage to steal the car. When you get the car back, if the airbag light stays on / flashes for more than 7sec, there's a problem with it. Did they actually manage to bust the ignition barrel off the steering column? That'd take some determination...
Got the car back last night. No airbag lights. They didnt rip any of the wires besides the igintion barrel.

Car is still off being assessed. Just found out, if anyone is with CBA, keep in mind you probably wont have salvage rights if your car is written off!
Well I didn't know that Comm Bank Australia did car insurance. I see that there are 60 reviews on the internet, about how @#$!%?* they are. All are one star reviews (can't select zero stars)
From shannons website: If your car is older than 35 years and is involved in an accident where it is a total loss, you have the option of retaining your unrepaired vehicle. If your vehicle is less than 35 years old, you will have the first option to purchase your unrepaired vehicle.
Oh i see still the Z is not 35 years old yet but good to know im hoping shannons take over my inaurance now that justcars is gone just have to wait till my renewal in july to find out if anyone from aami or shannons want to take on my contact i had with just cars.
I'm with Just Cars and my insurance renews in May. I received a renewal from AAMI and looks about the same cost if not cheaper ?. The thing I find amusing is I know Shannon's - Just Cars and AAMI are all tied together but when I originally bought the Zed a number of years ago AAMI didn't want to insure it even though every thing else I have insured with them. Go figger. Also Just Cars didn't care what mods I have as long as I told them. No mention of mods with the renewal from AAMI so as far as I'm concerned the know about them so they should be covered as the only thing that's changed is the business name and not the policy. Cheers Dave
Good to know i guess i hope shannons send me a quote but i guess we will have to wait and see. All i want is the cover i have now which is like $13000 which is great for my car i think everyone else wants $8000 max. I tried looking at insurances last year but its all about who is th3 cheapest not who will give u the highest agreed value for the right premiun price per year.
I have just gone with Shannons, i tried a few years ago and they would not insure my "Vert " for anymore than $10 grand and it would have cost $900 odd per year,,,,,,, now 3 years later $20Grand valuation, $750 per year all the others don't or won't recognize a 300zx convertible as being a car, all will only call it a targa top. Even as a member of RACQ , and having them try to get me too ensure with them i won't.
