I can hear a distinct clicking and have a miss causing the car to run like crap. I have datascan hooked up and have turned off each cylinder in turn and no specific cylinder seems to be the cause. I'm thinking two ? are missing or arcing - which would seem a little unusual. Badxtc has 'tipped' to wrap electrical tape around the stem to provide a temp repair ... The car has a Nissan retrofit S2 PTU (with conversion clips) not a 'wired in' and soldered one - if that is considered suspect? has anyone got a tip to isolate which is the culprit out of he 6 contenders? Coil packs are not the problem..... If rpm drops when you isolate each cylinder, you still have spark and fuel. Your problem lies elsewhere.... keep searching
I can hear clicking of spark being earthed to body. It seems to be coming from more than one point It seems to be random and easier to hear at low revs. If I turn off one cylinder at a time with datascan it does not seem to make any difference to the way the car is running, which leads me to believe its earthing or arcing on more than one pot? I have a temp sensor error warning on datascan when I run self diagnosis, which I clear, but it makes no difference to the way the vehicle is running. I will clean the contacts to stop this from happening .. When you say look further - have you any advice as to where and what could make the car miss if its not a dud coil pack or 2 ..?

I had a boost solenoid hard mounted years ago and it use to make a weird clicking noise could be something like that ?
Before you go any further check that the earths on the rear of the plenum near the idle control valve are tight and in good condition. Also get a timing light and hold the high tension lead clamp open then put the open piece hard against each coil and see if the light flashes funny on any of the coils. Might be just lucky and find the coil that is playing up real easy that way. Good Luck Dave
Many Many thanks for your help one and all. I have found dilapidated Coil connectors on a number of pots and have ordered replacements. a few days for delivery I will also look further into the clues provided in the meantime. Many thanks again steve
Doesn't make sense..... If you isolate one cylinder with datascan, it stops the spark to that cylinder...... if it makes NO difference to the running of the engine, then that cylinder is not firing in the first place (hence, no difference). If you isolate each of the 6 cylinders, some of them MUST have an effect because the engine cannot be running on 'no cylinders' You may have such 'dismal' spark to all 6 cylinders, that you don't notice when you isolate one cylinder. I would guess ptu and/or connectors.
Shorts show up in the dark. If you suspect the spark is shorting to the body then run the car in the dark. The darker the better and if there are any sparks to the engine or body you should see it in the dark. Michael Z.
Yes I agree BUT What I mean is that with every cylinder shut off (one at a time) there is no difference to the 'overall' running APART from the drop in the sequence caused by the cylinder being removed from the loop. If it was one cylinder you would expect the turning off to 'sort of' fix the problem. and only have the effect of shutting down the single cylinder - but no matter which of the six I shut down it only has the same effect of 'one cylinder' being removed from the firing sequence In other words no single cylinder shut down seems to effect the overall 'problem' other than making it worse by one cylinder. (on each of the 6 shut downs.. I have ordered a set of coil connectors and will seek further once they have been replaced.
