So I've had the tow hooks off for painting and want to reinstall with stainless bolts. You can't get stainless in fine pitch so I'm wondering can I retap it for 1.5? I haven't tried this before and I'm not sure if there is enough "meat" in the existing thread for it work...

I wouldn't, but it'll probably work. Wouldn't want it coming loose personally haha.

edit: Why not just go up a size and retap?

Yeah suppose that's an option? Would mean drilling out the brackets a little more but not a big deal I guess? Might see about using a thread insert but it starts to turn into a pretty big deal just to put shiny bolts where nobody will see them... But it's totally the kind of thing I'm into!

I'd just drill the brackets out and go up a size, easy :)

Why not just use plated bolts?
Only difference in appearance is a pale gold V's silver.

Cheers mate -I might look into the inserts first (assuming not to pricey) as my tow hooks have been known to get a workout of late....

    Thread pitch

You can do it, however it will certainly weaken the threads increasing the likely hood of stripping the thread.
Tow hooks can be subjected to shock loads depending on how they are used.
A point to consider is stainless steel bolts have a lower tensile strength & fine pitched threaded bolts are stronger than coarse threaded.

I wouldn't recommend it! Go bigger or use a insert. Also, as above SS is not a fantastic bolt material.

For something like a tow hook, I don't think it's wise to weaken the thread by tapping it to a different pitch.

    Don't retap with a different pitch .

Why not chrome the bolts if you want pretty

Yeah will go an insert -none at the shop so might put if off for another day.

Stock bolts are grade 7 would stainless not be equivalent?

Grade 7? As in Nissan 7? I believe that is equiv to 8.8. A80 316 may be similar, been years since I've looked into it.

Yeah Nissan 7. I never realised the Nissan grades were different from "standard"...
