Rattles

Is it just mine, or do all Z's live up to the "rattle box" name?

It's really getting to me, and I'm thinking of completely stripping the interior of the car, (laying down some dynomat when it's up) and tightening every single nut + bolt there is in there, and throwing out the rattling nasties..

And, is there anyway to close a door without it sounding like your slamming it so hard and shaking the glass? I am thinking of putting internal rubbers around the door, that help it seat comfortably, with a luxury sound, instead of a rough metal shaking - glass breaking sound.

Both my 300s have been nice and tight... just don't slam the doors lol. It's inevitable they will squeak and flex seeing as they've got two big holes in the roof. Can tighten the car up with strut braces and the like.

I haven't been slamming the doors, though. >.<
And the last owner absolutely BABIED the car, he didn't slam the doors either. It's just... Happening.. D:

Come my big rebuild in about 6 months time, I'll be doing just that. Stripping every bit of interior and laying mats and rubbers wherever appropriate from firewall to boot. I love the 300ZX, but they are certainly starting to show their age sadly and it annoys the hell out of me that a car that in its day was considered somewhat of a sports luxury car, to have all said rattles and let in so much road noise.

If it works out, I'm happy to keep my Zed for good, if it doesn't work out I'll consider selling it and either A, finding one in mint condition, or B, biting the bullet and moving up to a 350Z (before you all hate, first bloody thing I'll be doing, is Turbo'ing the thing if I don't pick one up that already is) just to have that 'new-ish' car feeling.

try to pin point where the rattle/noise is coming from. usually its hardened rubbers, seals or something. alot of times its the vynil touching vynil aswell... or maybe something is loose. pin point where the noise is coming from exactly first.

I will start a list of rattle locations.. :p
    From back to front :

    1. Boot lid - Left rear (was going over corrugated gravel road in my area, bounced really hard once, I heard a crunch, then it was non stop violent metal thrashing sound, the rattle has SORT of disappeared, when ever I hit a bump I get that same violent rattle)
    2. The... Heat sensor? On the boot window. (buzzes like a bee, (not the sound of a bee, just a metaphor.))
    3. Both rear seat belt housings. (vibrate like it's a... Not going to go there, women may get offended.)
    4. The driver seat axle. \_ (where it intercepts, extremely loose, have electric seats)
    5. Passenger + driver door window. (sounds like the glass is thrashing against the metal in the door when wound down)
    6. Inside the door. (must be a fair which of equipment loose, it rattles like a snake.)
    7. The electric window plastic housing on drivers side. (really loose, can lift an easy centimeter, and shakes horribly.)

I'm sure I've missed some key parts, like when closing a door, it sounds deathly, compared to the really snug sounding, comfortable luxury cars.. Never-the-less it IS a 21 year old car, I would do anything I can to make it fit snug.

1- you still have stock wing.. get tir do that, chances are you ahve some broken clip arms etc in your hatch which rattle around... get those out too
2- if tis loose, glue it back in place, if it is actually electrical like buzzing, then replace
3- tighten them up and if still rattly then check for broken bits
4- check connection bits then tighten all car bolts etc, gotta rememebr the seats are 20+ years old now so old stuff breaks( this goes for everythign in the car)
5- replace all rubber near window, also the rubbers along the top of doors etc
6-take door cards off, vaccum the botom of it, tighten shit thats loose and then listen for more loose bits
    7- bolt down and replace...

if you dont have time or want it checked over properly and thouroughly send me a pm

That cheap door slamming sound when you close them with the window down is present in all 90s Nissans... even S15s have that problem

awegazm has the right idea dude. pretty much specifically pin point the rattle, and see what you can do about that to make it stop...

pretty much all answered by awegazm but i just filled it bit more...

so conclusion, pin point exactly what it is where it is and look at a way to stop it or reduce the vibration/rattle :)

    Expensive and more weight...
My hatch interior trim was rattling so I just took it out. Next time I find another rattle I'll do the same... who needs interior trim anyway??

These cars really are starting to show there age. There are some good ones still around however that just don't rattle. My previous Z was one of those, it drove like a new car and not a single rattle anywhere. My current Z has got a little way to go .

If you have ever pulled out the plastic trim bits. You will notice that there are a black strips between all the plastic trim. If they hyave geen remioved the black strips fall out so when you put it all back the plastic rubs and squeeks like a bitch.
