hey guys after a brake upfrage for my z being a na aus spec i think it has smaller brakes than the tt version would it be worth swapping over to tt brakes or buying an aftermaket kit i want to run standard wheels so im guessing bigger kit wont fit im thinking swap to tt spec brakes with slotted discs good pads braided lines and good brake fluid would that be enough for track work ??? cheers ps are master cylinder braces any good???
A master cylinder brace is a good, easy mod. Can make the brake pedal feel a bit firmer. Most Nissans (and alot of cars) have some firewall flex which this will reduce. I've seen a firewall crack at the mounting point due to this. For stock wheels, TT discs (aftermarket slotted) and TT calipers to suit (rebuild if 2nd hand) are definitely a good start and shouldn't break the bank. You might be able to get bigger brakes than this, not sure for stock wheels..... others will know. If your going to get braided lines, get ADR approved ones. They should help for track work. Good pads and fluid will also make a solid improvement. Make sure to do a proper flush of old fluid. Overall, a good improvement, your on the right track. The standard TT brakes are a pretty good thing.
I bet you $10 you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between NA and TT brakes. No proper brake upgrades will fit under standard wheels either. Do it right and go GTR Brembo's or the spacer kit to run GTR rotors with stock calipers.
About 4mm difference i think. lol. and thickness, not diameter so not as important. And Chrispy is right - GTR brake upgrade FTW.
NA and TT front rotors are the same diameter and the only difference is a 4mm increase in thickness of the rotor for TT's. I would probably just stick with NA calipers unless you plan on getting 2-piece front rotors (more common in TT size). I have braided brake lines and i didn't notice a huge difference, i think the standard brake lines must be pretty good. the master cylinder brace gave a more noticeable improvement to pedal feel. if you do want to run larger rotors up front and still keep stock wheels then look for r33 GTS-t brakes as they are 296mm*30mm and they run 16" wheels too so should fit under zed stockies. i run standard calipers, slotted rotors and ferodo ds2500 pads and I am pretty happy with how they hold up at the track. Might look at adding some brake cooling before I go to Sandown or Philip Island but I didn't have any brake fade issues at Winton.
I have a set of TT calipers in black front and rears with AMS ceramic pads with only 600kms on them if you want them....all brake lines are still connected All you need to get is some slotted discs .
Be very careful. I have done some research on the Akebonos and the ROTA Grid Drift is the only 18" wheel that is said would clear them (according to the manufacturer in Taiwan) - but I still would want to test them for myself. If you go 19", all of that changes of course, and I have no information. However, Coz has a PDF of a caliper template on his website and it is easy enought to make a cardboard wheel tester. I did that, went to a dozen wheel shops, and didn't find a single 18" wheel that would work with the Akebonos.
TT OEM rotors are 4mm thicker than NA's rotors only after 1993 model that they changed the calipers to meoncast ion material to stop rotor warp.
not worth the effort and money to do the tt brake upgrade. if you are really keen to do so, get R33 gtst brake. they have larger (slightly) front caliper and rotor 296mmx30mm, and bolt-on too ( also similar price))
i heard that the tt brakes are 296 mm diameter and 30 mm wide but na are 280 and 28 mm wide? so its still an upgrade not sure bout rears and a gtr upgrade would be a fair price i would imagine trying to do it on a budget atm haha was selling my z but its grown on me
Nope, thats nearly all wrong TT are 280mmx30mm NA are 280mmx26mm If you have a late model NA (really anything '93+) you may have 30mm rotors, seems to be luck of the draw though. Normally 26mm.
