You can easily repair non-working ones yourself from the tech article for under $2

Actually Benny, $50 is very reasonable (check the new price from Nissan), and 2 of the clocks I've seen bear no internal resemblance whatsoever to the tech article you refer to. I'm confident others will have come across the same.
