In the excellent tech article "How to fix a rattling window (Upper guide rail nylon runner replacement)" at http://www.pexcom.com/images/Rattling-Window.pdf it shows how to remove the door card and guide rail in order to remove the pin holding the nylon runner (the bit to replace). I did this today but found you don't need to remove the door card or guide rail. You just remove the inner and outer covers on the top part of the door. Instead of removing the pin with a phillips head screw driver by aligning a hole in the door frame with the screw (which requires the door card to come off), I used a pair of pliers on the shaft of the pin by reaching in between the window and the door. This method also makes it easier to fit the plastic cover on the pin because you can do it before sliding the pin back down the re-greased guide. I had put this job off for ages thinking it was difficult. In the end it took me about 1 hour for both sides, including a coffee at half time. Happy zedding :zlove:.
sweet i have those new parts waiting for me to install. although i have the door trim etc off but if i dont have to remove guide rail even better
Chad, if you have the door trim off already then I would recommend taking the guide rail off. Its just a bolt and a nut to get it off and it will make screwing the pin on and off easier .
thanks for that top tip, bob .... i have had the "Coz" 'fix this rattle' kit sitting in the garage for two years .. terrified of the 4 or so hours this job was said to take ...!!! ... less reason to procrastinate now ....
It fixed the rattle but not the clunk. There is a metallic clunk that happens when closing the door with the window down. I need to investigate further but I wonder if it is something hitting on the side intrusion bar. Its the same on both doors. Has anyone else got this clunk?
yep i've always had that too, I just learnt to wind my drivers window up before closing, passenger is fine
IMPORTANT - read if you are attempting to fix your rattle. I have found a problem with this fix. It would explain Kieren's lack of success in fixing his rattle. The parts supplied by Coz (as linked in Kieren's post above), and as supplied to me, don't include the plastic cap (which Nissan calls a cover). I used one of my old ones when installing my new pin and nylon guide. However, I didn't realise that the old plastic cap had worn down flat. On reassessment of my 'fix', I reckon its much the same, just dwarfed by a metallic clunk I'm looking in to. Anyway, back to the point. The new caps have a high point which protrudes about 2mm according to a thread on TwinTurbo.net to prevent the rattle. Coz doesn't list the cap in its inventory but Courtesy Nissan lists them for US$1.77 each. Postage was estimated online to be about $40, so that's got to be wrong. I'm off to Nissan tomorrow to see if they can supply them. Here is the link to Nissan Courtesy with a picture of the cap: http://www.courtesyparts.com/80760h-cover-300zx-z32-1990-1996-p-37079.html
If Coz doesn't have/can't get then get Nissan Courtesy to send the part to Coz at USPS domestic postal rates. I'm sure he'd throw them into your parcel.
Good idea. Although I haven't got anything else to order just yet. However I'm sure I'll find a thing or two if I really try .
Nylon runner caps $1.55 from Nissan in Brisbane I checked with Highway Nissan at Springwood and the plastic caps (which Nissan calls a cover) are available for the princely sum of $1.55 each. That's cheaper than Nissan Courtesy Parts in the US! I'll pick up a couple of caps tomorrow and will report back on whether they fix my passenger side rattle, which does not have a cap. The driver's side has the old worn down cap and doesn't rattle but I'll replace it too.
Passenger side rattle gone I fitted the new plastic cap to the upper nylon runner on the passenger side door. Hey presto, the rattle is gone when closing the door, even with the window partly open . $1.55 fix, you've got to be happy with that . I decided to remove the door trim this time to have a close inspection of all the components I could see. Just as well too. The screws securing the speaker plate were loose, as well as the bolt holding the inner door handle bracket. The nylon runners on the two lower guide rails seem to be ok. I couldn't identify the cause of the clunk when closing the door with the window fully down . I'll leave that for another day.
For the clunk have a look at the reinforcement in the door (the side intrusion beam). The compliance shop put these in and they often aren't done that well. When I got mine it used to clunk like a bitty; squeezed a bit of high density foam in either end of between the intrusion beam and the door and the noise went away.
any chance you can post the nissan part numbers for the nylon runner & cap.. ill need to do mine soon as there noisy aswell.. may be helpfull for other people also
Nissan part numbers for nylon runner and cap .... The nylon runner and metal pin were supplied as one assembly and are known as a 'SLIDER-DOOR WINDOW' part no. 80332-46P00. I ordered these from http://www.conceptzperformance.com/C...ar_Type=NIS300. You might be able to get the caps through here too, although they aren't listed on the site. The plastic cap is known as a 'COVER HANDLE' part no. 80392-30P01. I bought mine from Nissan Australia, but you can see them here http://www.courtesyparts.com/80760h-...6-p-37079.html
