Who can't view Flash files?

I remember a while back IB mentioned his work barred all flash files... is anyone else in a similar boat? It occurs to me as someone who lectures in Flash I might as well rewrite some of the menus and whatever else to be in Flash. Does anyone have any objections or won't be able to view? It's not at all necessary so even if it's only a small group I won't do it.Also, if we ever want to do a slightly more in depth change to the look and feel of the site I'd have to go in and edit EVERY tech article, static page and event write up. A way to prevent this problem in future is to use Cascading Style Sheets, but it will still require a change to all of the existing stuff now. Does anyone know how to use CSS (it's pretty simple) and is up for some mind numbingly boring work? :)Also, while discussion site issues, can I again ask if there is much interest in the photo db? It's pretty time consuming to update and I don't really know if people find it that useful, so feedback would be good :)Other news for those who care: I believe Simon is rewriting some of the site to use SQL as the limitations of Access (which the site currently runs under) are starting to get to be too much. Simon can elaborate on that if he wants.... I actually don't know what this will mean, if anything :)Finally, we are having trouble logging in to aus300zxclub.com, which is why it's been a while since the last update.Ben

    Do they work with Netscape?

Netscape users (I'm not one but zcar91 is) don't have the menu working correctly.

I can't view flash either from work...

and it s$^ts me for the fact that I use to use flash a lot with programming at uni etc.Due to the military being on a network, we can only use what they load for us on the server...and do you think flash is one of them?? Yeah right :|

if you want to skin the website to be able

to change the look and feel then I'd suggest looking into jakarta-velocity templating with CSS. Using apache as the webserver and tomcat as the servlet engine will give you the most flexibility too. As for flash I'd personally prefer it never appeared on any of the webpages due to the download time and inconsistancy of how web browsers handle it. It's unnecessary and will slow the server down with all the extra downloads of flash objects. Please keep the photo DB as I've used it a fair bit to work out where all the pipes run to when putting my baby back together. Good news about ditching direct access to an Access DB and going to an SQL type access (assuming it's a java backend using a JDBC driver for the SQL) as this will allow swapping to almost any database without changing code.

I hate the use of flash on websites...

always seems to restrict the way I like to view sites, and force you into the way the site expects you to view.
For instance if I want to right click a menu option and "open in new window" etc, being flash I lose that option.

last few weeks ive been learning more and more flash action scripting at work, i can use flash good but never got around to the scripting side of it.a flash menu would be cool as, you can do so much with flash, and keep the file sizes so small.

    CSS and Photo DB

Ummm, I would be happy to do some CSS stuff for you Ben if you want.
Also for the PhotoDB, if you would like i would be able to give you a copy of the one that i wrote on my site (here) but it requires PHP. I could just host the photo's for you, but it would be a bit slow as my site comes off my cable connection at home. But whatever the case, if you dont think that people would mind that it is a little slow, i would be more than happy to do a aus300zx.hurgh.org and just put the photo album up there..Anyway, let me know. Also if you want to change the site to PHP, i will be able to help out with anything you want.-|- Hurgh -|-

    Ah my hero

I've been meaning to ask about your PHP stuff for a while, as it seems pretty much already set up to handle the PhotoDB with not a lot of change. There's going to be a dinner in a week or two, will you be around to talk about it?Ok, won't go the Flash route as not everyone seems to be able to view them. Don't know why everyone's so anti-Flash though.... I'm only talking the menu... would have been less than 50kb and as far as compatibility it's got to be a lot better than the current menu!Ben

    KISS? I prefer NOOKIE

Needless Or Overly Complexity Kode and Integrated Effects (ok, that was a bit of a stretch :) ) are every developers dream. Besides, despite what I'm hearing here, Flash is about the simplest addition you can make with virtually zero compaitibility problems (it's a hell of a lot better than html or javascrips), and I think the current menu system is pretty average.
As for a completely static menu, there isn't enough room.Ben
