Wheel Making a clicking noise

    Hi Guys,

Well I've now officially finished my first semester of Uni, and am ready for 2 months of fixing the annoying tiny things on the bitch which always get overlooked. First on the list is my clicking front passenger wheel.

FIRSTLY - Its NOT loose wheel nuts
Secondly - They are new enough pads, and the disc was machined at the same time.

My thoughts are related to the ABS sensor - I read on another thread that this can rarely make a clicking noise? - I am also having problems with my ABS actuator not disengaging - When this happens, I disconnect the unit fully, and leave it for a couple of weeks, plug it back in and all good. Not sure if its related, but worth mentioning regardless.

Can anyone tell me any more about this please?

First mistake. Expect extra trouble now. Have you checked tread for things stuck in them?

Jack up the front of the car and spin the wheel by hand.

    Can you hear the click?
If yes - Find the click.
If no - Is there anything in the tread (only clicks when driving). Can you pull/push the wheel sideways or wobble top/bottom (wheel bearings)

What about bushes or suspension. Anything been replaced/tampered with of late?

When did it first state? Could it be weather conditioned. Only started once it started to get cold...

ok, my bad, i should have mentioned before - ITS ONLY UNDER BRAKING

Its loud enough that I can hear the sound bounce of fences and what not, and hear it in the car..

Passengers can feel it through the footwell.. - I can't really test it by spinning the wheel because its under braking..

there isn't anything in the tread - its been there for that long, and I have even had new tires on since it started..

and its been through all four seasons since it started..

Any other ideas? :) - thanks for help so far..

My money is firmly on a cracked brake rotor(even if it has been "machined")or a broken wheel bearing(when braking, a great deal more load is placed on the front bearings, due to weight transference).

would either of these worsen over time? - Its been happening for coming up to 12 months now, not worsening or getting better..

Have you checked tension rod on that side? Have had another member with a shudder whilst braking due to thrashed out tension rod... Hows the caliper? No chance its loose?

hmm caliper is an interesting thought.. hadn't even thought of that or the tension rod.. ill have to wait till i get to dubbo to check it all - don't have a jack or anything here :( - will update when im back in Dubz :zlove:

I might have the same problem with driver side front wheel. Under braking will make a clunk, but may not be from brake. In my case, I have a problem with the steering being 'bump'?? steered at centre, so have so far replaced - front upper control arm bearings, tension rods, lower control arm inner bushes, passenger side ball-joint, steering arm bushes, front swaybar bushes and front brake pads. Next weekend, having bushes in rear subframe and diff replaced.

If you aren't going back to Dubbo soon and need a jack and tools then pm me. I'm working on mine this saturday.

What about the steering rack bushes? When they wear out there is sometimes enough movement for the whole rack to move... giving you that bump steer feedback through the wheel. Also what tension rods did you install? New/repaired stock ones or rose joined aftermarket ones?

As with the aftermarket ones there tends to be a bit more of a clunk under braking or hard cornering . Something to do with the bolt that goes through the rose joint, it can be a fraction worn and allow a very tiny amount of movement to occur.

Mandas zed has this, but also this can be coupled with a whole set of other flogged out bits :(

    food for thought.

Done the steering rack bushes - knew about this one from my first Z. Picked it up in Ade and drove it home with the steering rack moving about 8mm every corner

Have had aftermarket rose joint tension rods for a few years and even replaced them as noted above - probably not necessary in hindsight.

But thanks, will check the fit of the bolt thru rose joint.

thanks for the offer - at work at the moment, at this stage looks like ill be heading to Dubbo tomorrow..

Its not quite so much a clunk, as a clicking noise.. imagine the wheel of fortune clicking around, but in a more metal like way? :p - im GREAT at explaining things lol

    Mitch Has one gear: GO

A slightly Warped brake rotor and the wear indicators will make a sound.
So will the brake shims (or lack thereof) under braking

ill have a look at the wear indicators - i hadn't thought of a warped rotor clicking on it.. will have a look-see when i get it home :)

Could be a misplaced weight used for balancing your wheel?

Does this clicking still happen at slow speeds or only at road speed under firm braking?
