Hi Everybody, I'm half way through modifying my fuel rail and during this i've had to remove some of the coating that's on it to have some fittings brazed on the ends. My question is should I get it re-coated in something? Is it likely to rust? I thought maybe ceramic coating might be a good idea but I can't seem to find much on people doing it to fuel rails, other than an old for sale post by Chewy. Maybe zinc coating or something else would be better/more cost effective. Ceramic would have the obvious benefits of heat insulation but how effective (or ineffective) this would be on a part such as this I have no idea. Thoughts? Regards Ben
zinc works. i wouldnt ceramic as it will trap heat inside the rail. are you braising an fittings onto the ends of the rail?
I would ceramic coat, wouldn't be worried about trapping heat inside -definately hotter outside than in! Will it make a difference? No idea.
Ceramic is of course theoretically better. Price comparison I don't know how much dearer it is. Realistically the temperature difference of the "flowing" fuel in the rail between a ceramic coated rail and a zinc coated rail is not going to have any effect on fuel delivery whatsoever. *if* your talking about a low rate of flow, or extreme engine bay temps then yes ceramic may offer some benefits, but you'll see more adding a fuel cooler. But we've argued that before.
Yeah i've got -6 steel AN fittings going on both ends. Thanks for the advice guys.I might do some ringing around. If the price is similar then i'll look at ceramic, otherwise i'll just go zinc. Chewy mentioned in his post that his HPC coating was $80, but that was a few years ago. I'll see what I find out anyway. Cheers Ben
I had mine HPC coated a few years ago but I couldn't tell you the cost because it was with a heap of other parts.
Just an update for anyone interested. I've had the stock rails ceramic coated. Cost was $88. Dwight from Electronic injector services in brisbane is a champ by the way. First he offered to pick up the coated rails from Competition coatings. Then he supplied all the o-rings and seals and connectors for a top price and has serviced my injectors and re-fitted it all together. I should have it all back any day. Ben
Got them in the post today, they look awesome! I'll post pics later Dwight even gave the injector caps a bit of a polish for me. what a guy! hehe
