    Hi everyone,

I am partway through a full engine rebuild on my Z. The mechanic has informed me of the following and I was wondering what everyones advice is?

"Just thought I would let you know that your turbos have a bit of end play in them. What this means is that they are on their last legs and anyones guess how long they will last.

If they do happen to fail then the engine has to come back out again.

    So your options are:

    1. just install them as is
    2. get them reconditioned by MTQ (will have to get you a quote but in the $1600 ballpark)"

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Used ones

You could go for a used pair.

UAS are advertising a pair on thier website somewhere, more pricey than your usuall seconds but theyre garanteed (whatever that means).

    Buy new turbos.

High flows have a bad reputation on this forum for failing prematurely.

Add a thousand dollars to what you are already spending on your turbos to have them rebuilt, and you have brand new turbos, capable of a bit more power.

Or, buy good second hand turbos, but even that is a bit risky.

set yourself another 1500 and whack a pair of gt28r's on there, with 20 psi and accomidating mods you can see 300rwkw quite comfortably

lol combine all 3 options, trav is right, if your after future power and are capable of arranging the funds.. hook up some gt28's and live it up, they can handle nice power and are definatly streetable. and also user friendly to a stock engine, if you done a stock rebuild.

Zductive is right too, you can get new turbos for pretty much less then what it costs to rebuild yours, new turbos with a warrenty... mmm now thats reliability!

yeti is right also, 2nd hand turbos= cheap... but risky, like he said buying from a reputable place like UAS with a guarentee is abit more sensible but i dont imagine you would save much off getting new ones.

in my opinion, if your happy with stock power and dont plan to shoot for more in the future, replace with new stock ones... people dont normally chose this option normally sway towards upgrading for some reason.

Or, if all else fails, I have several sets of used stock turbos with guarantees at good value prices...:)

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

    what would you call...

good value prices for used turbos just out of curiosity? (for a set of stock turbos off a 5spd Manual)
    - and do they come with exhaust housings and actuators also? (complete units)

Don't get 2nd hand turbo's under any condition.

I've made the mistake twice now, both being rebuilt high flowed and they definitely failed prematurely.

Not worth the hassle and heartache.

Do yourself the favour and get a brand new set of turbo's.

It will save you in the long run and boost your power up while your at it.

    Experience is proof.
