what is this unit/hose

    just gave the zed another weekly check.
    found a vacuum leak and this hose is broken (pic)
    it is between the battery and fuel filter.

    what is this unit doing? currently i just block it, is it ok?

    Vacuum control valve going to the carbon canister. Look to EF&EC section of workshop manual for some light reading.
