Ok well, its been on my mind and just simply would like to know what would happen, if say i was driving on a quiet road doing 50kmph and then i pull on the 'E break' (hand break).... basically what would the car then do, and how bad for the car is it? thanks

cant say exactly as i havnt done it, but logic tells me it would just slow down.... the only damage made would be to the handbreak stregnth and ur disks...

depends how hard/fast you pull it up. Pull it up hard, and if your hand break is tight you will lock up. Slow, and you'll slow down gradually. Dont do it. Unless you have a hydraulic setup (drifting/rally) it will just do damage.
If you want to do it just to experience it, make sure you clutch in first.
Pulling the handbreak for fun is for P platers in mums front wheel drive, who usually end up hitting gutters and breaking axles, or worse, their heads.

my handbrake wasn't harsh enough to lock up the back... but would have to be if you are looking into drifting lol.. (on suitable trackwork ofcourse)

go find a nice quiet industrial estate with wide roads and do it :) ,thats how you learn what it does, theres far too many variables to answer a question like that :bash: :zlove:

Don't influence him into hooning geeeeezzzz... he will get his car impounded!! haha:D :D ...plus we all know what the handbrake is meant for.. Keep your car from rolling away. If you want it to lock-up when your driving get a hydraulic handbrake... which is illegal... for drifting on the track.

i was stating a hydraulic handbrake is illegal... so he knows... and its only to be used on the track... I've heard you can legally have 2 hand brakes?? aslong as you got a cable one, and got an engineering cert i guess... someone will know. I was only yankin ya chain too =P

I agree with your point here James. I've often wondered why in the US it's referred to as the emergency brake instead of the hand brake. Wonder if they mean parking emergency?

    Cheers,
    Evan.

I've never pulled the handbrake going at 50km/h, probably 30-40 max. But If you pull it hard you can lock the rears... then you just need to know when to release it. I guess the only damage would be stretching your handbrake cable, wear on the handbrake shoes and drums and maybe flatspotting the rear tyres if you hold it for too long... oh and maybe spinning out and crashing... that's why i wouldn't try it on a street, you need to try it at a skidpan because the first time you do it you don't want to mess up and hit something.

This is a thing that they should make compulsory to get a licence, not driving hours.. Its the curiosity that makes kids crash, I wonder what its like to drive at 200kph. Well lets try it... Wonder what will happen if i hit the e brake... Try it, Should be made to go on a wet skidpan and be shown what happends when shit goes down... Then you learn what to do, what not to do....

You will never stop "hooning" its been there since the car came.....

So why not make it safer.... Going back to the dead plane shell days here....

    At 50kph

not much can go wrong providing the road is not wet. If you reef it on then it will simply lock up the rear wheels and you may need to correct the steering to keep it straight. Or turn the wheels into the slide to do a u -turn:D This is my preferred method of 3 point turns:p

I remember years ago (when I was a hoon lol) I reefed my handbrake on at 120kph at the illegal drags and that was fun !!!! There is a lot to be said for car control.

Aquaplaning is fun....... Hasent happened in a car, But try racing at 90kph, 1" off the ground, with little control, with 2 other drivers right beside u,

That got me my first pic in the mag, 3 wide inteh wet, sideways off teh straight...
    Fun times...

but seriously, DONT GET THE NICKNAME GUTTERS........

    AMEN BROTHER

Even doing the AHG Day where the instructor just left us to it, I learnt HEAPS in half a day. I dare say I learnt more in that half day about what the car MIGHT do and how to keep in control, than in 12 years of driving on the road

Maybe if i was a hoon, I'd have learnt faster :p lol, but you get my point.

Maybe they should have NORMAL driving for Getting from L's to P's, and then you MUST complete an Advanced course (even if its just 1 day) to get rid of your P's.

Oh now to get off your ps you have to do a "Hazzard Preception Test" ON A FREAKING COMPUTER..... Im mean, i have to do that shit soon... But for real, whats that gunna prove?

    ...................

Like you said, nothing beats a good day, The amount i have learnt from racing karts is not funny....

I know im not the best driver, and dont know all the rules, But Im also not the one out there getting booked for doing 120 in a 60 zone...........

We need places where you can go and drive with speed, still at your own risk, but none the less in a safer environment for "the public" and yes, there are bad things about these courses that teach you how to handle situations, ie people getting cocky and thinking they are the best there ever was and they own the roads....

But still.... The more knowledge the better......

Some people should be made to redo licence tests as well, and be shown at least the general give way rules........

well here's my on topic reply

Ive done it in the Excel = lots of fun haha. Back end locks up and you get lots of smoke and stuff. ONLY EVER done this in a straight line. I wont try a u-turn as i suspect it will flip on its side and i'll look very stupid and have to sleep in the spare room for thr rest of my days

Ive done it in the Zed = nothing really happened. Maybe due to a worn handbrake? dunno... but yeah, just slowed me down and not much. Didn't lock up at all.
The zed is a heavy car, and the handbrake is designed for keeping it from rolling away when parked. Nothing else.

Buy a corrola as a bunky and knock yourself out ;)

we need a seperate thread for this as its a HUGE topic ;)

Im all for the computer test. Better than nothing. Whats the alternative? Drive through a housing estate at speed while an instructor pushes school kids in front of your car? hehe

so better than nothing. At least its situational awareness. Teaching people to look at more than the road in front of them.

But yeah it NEEDS to be along side some real "what to do when shit hits the fan" type driver training. Also **** it, I'd throw in some shock tactics. Showing police photos of nasty crashes SHOULD be a must

But no... coz someone would claim they were tramatised and take the gov to court

I could go on and on and on... but i wont.
