Aprat from the ecu having a different number are there any other signs that your car started life as an automatic or a manual?
Wiring Loom With 3 plugs missing from top of engine bay drivers side, just behind the power steering pump, is a good give away that it started life as an auto.
some other things... auto has a power/hold switch next to the gear leaver. An auto converted to manual, may also get the power light on the console flashing at start up. There may be an additional Auto control box next to the ECU. plus the other mentioned things
A less reliable indicator A less reliable indicator is a manual TT with factory cruise control, almost all auto TTs had CC, far fewer factory manual TT cars had CC. This is just an "indication" of probability, it is not as reliable as the other indicators above.
pffft! this is undectable to the eye if in the car. it's true the auto has a very slightly smaller exhaust housing on the turbo, but u wouldn't be able to tell unless u maybe had both up against each other. yes yes i know ur just stirring up shit
there are 2 plugs next to the fusebox on my car a brown and a kind of silver. On my dads car he has the same but an extra grey one... is that for the auto? (car is manual now possibly started life as auto)
the plug going into the tps will have 3 female connectors, the manual only uses two, but still has 3 male connectors
Actually, having an auto ECU in a manual is fine (not the other way though), so it's not a good indicator anyway. Previous owner may have aquired a replacement ECU at some time. TT and NA aren't interchangeable either.
auto works with manual, but not manual ecu on auto... the clutch bleed line on a true manual comes up at the front drivers side near where the hicas normally would be on a tt, but mostalot of workshops bypass this clutch bleed point and use the secondary point further down near the clutch fluid reservoir.... ive down the auto to manaul conversion, and it s worth doing for anyone considering it.... other give aways could be a huge steaminbg hole in your wallet from having the conversion done yourself....lol
