Meh... KITT is so eighties... I think we can improve on that ;)

I like simplistic... a couple of buttons, a screen and some vents, nice and simple

    this is so overkill...

the 3000 however is pretty hot

Just an update on the surround.

Ive been quoted $800 to get an accurate scan of the piece.

Im thinking I might have to go old school and trace some dimensions onto paper. Scan at 1:1 and build a model using the scans as a template.

    Completely doable.
just need the front on shape and the curve of the dash. Might be able to figure out the screw holes myself but I don't even screw my surround in. It seems to sit there pretty content without them.

I did a 3D model of a camera by importing images of all sides, setting them as backgrounds and using them as a guide to create the model

what animation package are you using ...or what file format does it need to be in? I think I have a 3d model converter, it was handy to convert low poly models for use in a gaming engine... maybe we could model in max and convert to DFX?

I could use a few things,

    Autocad 3d
    form z
    3d max

As long as its in a dxf or similar file I can open it in most software I use.

Using images in templates would be the best bet.
Most of the surround is irrelevant. Its just the external dimensions and depth that is important

You should be converting to STL.

Well last time I touched the stuff, it was stl.
    3D milling or 3D printing.

Why not create an insert to hold your LCD panel that includes a flange to cover up the hacked edges of the center console after you cut out the single DIN frame.

You will also need a bracket to support everything.

To print you need it to be stl format.
But to model the part first you can use a ton of other formats including skp...

Then convert it to stl when you're ready to print.

Something like sketchup or formZ would be ideal because of how quickly you could play with ideas. But if you wanted 100% accuracy you'd go autocad or 3dsmax..

    Heaps of options really.

    Is that photoshopped?

    It looks awesome!!!

Ive had some assignments to do and was starting to lose faith since the quotes im getting for everything are enormous (unless you want to pay $1200 per surround :p )

    But,
this was an eoi and it seems there is a ton of interest in the idea for custom stereo surrounds.. let me get a basic 3d happening then ill see what I come up with.

Get yourself a copy of inventor or solidworks.

You'll thank me later, I do this sh!t all day everyday.

I tried downloading inventor last week, but I kept getting a missing dll error or something similar :/

sounds like the software to use though.

if I could walk into a shop and get the surround precisely scanned for $100, I'd do it tomorrow. but being quoted $1000 seems like a rediculous figure.

I can play around with basic models and get some concepts, but it seems like a waste of time if its not accurate. so when I get onto some cheaper scan equipment, I'll get a model happening...

this is definately not a 'I'll have something next week' project -_-

Sounds like your running windows 8 !!

    2015 versions + dont like windows 8.

youneed at least 8.1 and you have to re-write the install config file. PITA

do a google search there is a fair bit on instaling inventor to w8.

acurate scans would help but you should be able to measure it prettywell. the hard part will be the curved front profile.

    good luck.

how big is that tablet in the pic though?

I was thinking it might be possible to re route the vents down the side of the surround. that would mean redesigning the piece from the heater body that attaches to the back of the stereo surround. or, running the vents to the unused vents that run across the top of the surround.

    Yeah, I'm running W8.
I haven't sat down and googled setting up inventor on w8 just yet.

    update

    Just an update.

I'm still hunting for quotes on 3d scanning.

if I can get onto a reasonably priced company for scanning, I'd be keen to scan in a few other parts for later...

While I'm waiting to sort all these ridiculous issues out with windows 8 (literally can't install anything easily on this POS OS)

you guys who have tablets you want to be able to dock on the stereo surround. do you feel like tracing the external dimensions of the tablets and marking down where any inputs might be that you would need access to.

overall widths, heights and depth would be ideal.

    good news...

    linky

Im not sure if the link will work but try it...

I took a million pics of my dash and used autodesk recap photo to model them together..

im pretty impressed with the results.
its similar to 123d catch but with this I think I can make a mesh model export file.

If I can get this to model the interior well enough. I can start playing with some ideas..
