    Hi All,

I got pulled over by police and need to get a compliance check on it for sound and emissions.

they claim my car @ 4800rpm = 90db no higher or fail

    like seriously ?

    i'm gonna fail :(

can i get some input on this please ?

oh yeah, no cats, never had when bought it.

Well, tomorrow, go to an exhaust shop, and get cats on it. DO NOT do an emissions test without cats.

Get your Exhaust dude to add whatever mufflers need to be added to drop the noise level. Bad luck mate, its gotta be done.

no cats is a big no-no... lucky you didn't get any big fines...
If you look here, the default test speed is 3200rpm but if you scroll down to NISSAN 300ZX (VG30) it says the test speed would be 4800rpm (table doesn't distinguish between turbo or N/A versions ) so I believe their claim is right.
Good luck with the test :)

Noise test - They take the car to a quiet place with no houses to reflect noise.

Put a microphone 45 degrees from exhaust, 590 mm away at same level as exhaust pipe

Rev engine to 5000 rpm or so and measure noise when you take your foot off accelerator. Do that 4 times. Don't do it on a rainy day as more reflections and therefore louder.

    Silver was 85.6 dB(A)

Emissions test - Take the car to RTA Penrith. They put the car on a dyno and try to match the car speed according to a predetermined graph.

They measure THC g/km, NOx g/km, CO g/km and CO2 g/km (whatever they are)

You get a graph where emissions are plotted against time and also speed is shown.

Make car is properly warmed if you had a long wait.

Quite a few years ago when i was 18 i got busted driving my xu1 with a very very loud exhaust. I had to front up for a noise test . my mate said he heard from some one that you pull the muffler and poke steel wool in the pipe. So we went and bought a heap of steel wool and just around the corner from the test place we stopped and pulled the muffler then with a short broom hand we rammed the pipe full of steel wool then slipped the muffler back on.I drove very slowly to the test place .I was shitin whene he started it up and gave it a few revs but the wool stayed in and the car past.We drove off slowly afterwards and when i pulled the muffler i reved the crap out of it and all this steel wool whent flying.Maybe try the steel wool to drop the noise also , only thing is you will need clamp on mufflers.

i recommend very coarse steel wool though. Fine or regular grade steel wool burns very very easily so if that exhaust is very hot or spits out a lot of unburnt fuel you might end up with a flame thrower (well - spark thrower).
This is what burning steel wool does when you spin it around (ie lots of air flow to throw the sparks about):

imagine the noise tester guys face when he saw THAT hahaha :)

i only just found out about the cats. due to gear box rebuild = exhaust off and noticed it. & was on the cards to fix until this happened.

and the car was already registered when bought it, the pink slip they never checked the cats.

also got sound test via exhaust shop and its 102.9 :( just a little over

i'm going for a whole new exhaust + cats and not loud, over the drone. then get it passed.

Mate... Call me tomorrow, And I'll give you the details of my NSW DECCW tests.

2 words of advice from the outset:

1- make it as quiet as you can with quality mufflers
2- get NISSAN Cat-converters... ideally still in their standard front pipes. Some inspectors are picky about the 'unknown quantity' that is standard cats re-welded into non-standard pipes, suspecting that they are gutted.

The bloke I went thru was especially tuff. Just make sure you get all your stuff sorted before you go... or make the car a dedicated track zed and modify the living crap out of it. :D

I'll PM you with my phone number mate, if you want a yarn about it tomorrow..

cats will change the sound slightly too.

steel wool and get a plate with holes in it and slide that into where a flange is.

Thought they can tell if the cats are gutted with the heat laser gun?

They can, because the catalysts will read the same temp as the 'control' EGT in the pre and post cat pipes.

Whether they are gutted or not... if they are not OEM nissan, they are defectable. You can appeal that your non standard cats adhere to the pollution regs, but this requires a EPA funded dyno test, and assumes all other pollution control systems are in place and working efficiently (not likely in older cars).

the plate with the holes in it wont work. I mean it will quite it down but if the guy sees it u will fail. It needs to be welded in place for him to measure the sound with it.

Do urself a favour and get a full stock exhaust system chuck it on. Get it cleared and then go and get a new full exhaust...

And also 2seater and 2+2 front pipe to cats will be the same its the cat back section that is diff from the 2 types
