ok driving up through the sandringham shops tonight (SE burbs of melbourne) i heard a loud pop or bang and towards the rear of the car and it started to run very rough... at first i thought it was rear tyre but they are fine, i limped up the road and then i heard a massive clunk and any movement in car (neutral or in gear) causes it to make clunking sound in time with movement...

i think that the tailshaft is fucked, but i dont know why this would be considering i had the 2 piece rebuilt with new centre bearing and reco'ed ends less that 4 months ago. i think what has happened is that the shaft has somehow dislodged itself where the centre bearing attaches to underside of car but i have no idea why?

tow truck coming to take her to safe place in hour but has any one got any ideas to be checking for in the mean time?

i assumed it wouldn't be the box because getting in and out of gears is fine, clutch feels fine, not blowing smoke or anything so just tailshaft is only thing i can come up with?

    argghhh help

    yep thats what I think.....

sounds something tailshaft related.... but then again, the tailshaft shouldnt move if the car is in neutral?? I would say you need to get under the car and have a good look. Also might be worth checking out the diff. My sigma once did the same thing you just described, and it was because the uni joints had seized (very old) and the tailshaft wasnt moving properly.

    Cheers

shaft should move even if in neutral

ok towed and somewhere safe for the moment. up at 8AM before starting work at 12 to see if i can fix her!

i would think that the shaft would still move if in neutral if im pushing it or rolling it? dont understand why not? :S

anyway im fairly certain thats what it is now, but its a bitch of a job getting exhaust and such off just for that. if the gearbox was rooted would it clunk in every gear or just one or 2 of them? also is it strange that the gear stick was jolting around when the car was being rolled onto the tow truck? that was distressing...

is there any chance that the centre bearing just dislodged off the chasis of the car and is just clunking around on its own? thats best explanation i could figure out still... if so i guess all thats required is to re attach it by bolt or some other method back to chasis and hope for the best?

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys...sleep time

if your lucky the tailshaft has come undone.

its quiet difficult to get at some of those bolts on the 2 piece shaft to tension them up.

if your unlucky you spat a uni joint and its fsfwef up

    Check your >>

rear shocks as well. The sound that you describe is similar to a shock breaking at the top, this will then rattle around a bit & the car will feel funny in the rear end when driving.
It never hurts to check all possiblities.

problem found, uni joint connecting shaft to gear box snapped!

was up again at 8 only after getting to sleep at 2 after zed towed this morn. went down and put her on stands, and without even taking the exhaust off i hoist could see what happened. the uni joint(?) that connects the shaft to the gear box and clean snapped in 2!!! the gear box sheath casing also sustained a bit of damage too, all bent out of shape! i have never ever seen this happen before. i the centre bearing also looked fucked so what i think happened was:

    1) centre bearing was in dodgy batch
    2) bearing spring shat itself causing disallignment
    3) after not being alligned correctly any sudden power increase/decrease caused massive unorthodox force of uni joint at box end and just crapped itself...

im so angry bout this because i had the shaft balanced, new bearing and completely reco'ed less than 2 months ago (5 thousand k's) and this should not happen... do you think i should ask the guy that reco'ed this a big WTF and ask him to replace it free of charge coz im so angry bout this. cost me $500 or so for reco plus 150 for towing, i demand compensation! :zlove:

on the plus side i'll change my oxy sensors while im at it and i managed to get shaft out in about 90 minutes on my own which i felt is a good effort! must be getting good at working on zeds! :zlove:

anyway i guess its not that much work replacing the shaft, dithering about 1 piece or rebuild my piece of shit 2 piece. ill try and post some pics up later, i got some on my phone

anyway im hitting the town, peace out holmes

    Definately look into >>

    warranty on the work done.
Just hope that it didn't last till you drove out the door.
If what you say is right, then the place that reco'ed your shaft should have informed you that the uni was suspect, at the least.

Do you have a warranty from the shop?

Even if you don't the least they could do is look at it.

Hopefully they'll at least provide you with a repaired tailshaft, don't like your odds on getting anything for the towing though.

    Hope it works out!
