Speaking of UAS, what's the go with Shifters car? I saw it for sale on their website a few weeks back... Haven't heard much from Shifter lately as well - shame to see him get rid of it after all the work that's been put into it
Yep $39k with Autronic computer with CDI ignition, oil cooler with remote Z9 oil filter , alloy flywheel with new 6 button clutch, engine and dump pipes, radiator and header tanks etc. He told me he was a Coal Miner in Newcastle???? This motor had extrude honed everything, cryo treated and HPC coated everything, solid Tomei lifters, electric water pump, custom cam belt pullies and custom underdrive harmonic balancer, Argo rods, Super tech valves, 55mm throttle bodies etc so all the good stuff. He basically got a motor that was near new for the price of the parts. Can do similar power for much less now though with what we have learnt and prices come down on parts. In fact we did one for half the price. Not quite same features, but works well and have not put on dyno for full squeez but should make almost same power and is very reliable. Infomercial warning anything below as extra. See here for more. http://300zx.com.au/racecarpage3.htm Below is motor we have now still going strong. All new set up with first Zed to get Power FC and twin pass radiator, and bigger oil cooler and totally different set up.
Nice looking motor there John, did you have to modify the engine mount brackets to get the compressor inlet piping through? Are they 2.5" pipes? What turbos are you using and what power is this motor putting out @ what boost? Sorry for the 20 questions...
JOHN !!!!! ARE you are developing a sense of humour !!!- or are you having my ghost-Gag-writer moonlighting for you ?????v
And what about power steering? I'm aware that you would have scrapped AC, but are you using a conventional steering rack?
No This motor had custom billet alloy alternator bracket which instead of about 960 grams from memory was about a third of this weight and non turbo alloy power steering bracket instead of tt heavy cast iron bracket. I use a VQ30 alloy power steering pump which was not sold with motor and is same dimensions as VG cast iron pump. I have done away with high speed low speed factory solenoid on steering rack which saved 530grams and used a rack out of a 98 model NA zed. Power steering fluid cooler and we run Redline synthetic power steering fluid. Below vid shows what happens when steering cooks and locks at the track. Lucky I had run off. All sorted now and no problem. http://300zx.com.au/Videos/jpoffdogleg.avi UAS alloy power steering resevor moved to back of engine bay. Custom light weight, stronger and simple Rose jointed adjuster for power steering pump.
Specs GT28RS with hose inlet of 2 3/4 inch so flows a bit better than flange inlet which is tighter and smaller pipe. Yes custom Made 438rwkw on Martini fuel on 24psi from memory and bent rods and since put lighter and stronger Scat rods, larger and lighter water pump pulley, alt and power steering, removed engine vibrating UR alloy crank pulley, changed to factory pulley then later to UAS race harmonic balancer.
Infomercial Yes henecked bit of fun as get warned with over imformation and not enough bling talk and going with the flow type deal. Claytons business no problems but real business with knowlegde and facts another thing. Apperently pre warning of things is OK? Re Shifter cars is all good and lots of car and yes up for sale and pretty much sold actually.
Considering the work and components that went into the engine, its easy to see why it fetches such a high price. And it looks very nice too Power steering cooler? Is that needed because the P/S pump is at high revs in a race engine causing the fluid to heat up considerably?
yEP This is why high revving race cars run the biggest pulleys you can fit pretty much. This motor also had things like water flow corrections in head with extra water jets, time serted the lower valley plenum and converted to custom stainless studs, had everything balanced also including engine pulleys. Also custom turbo's which we extrude honed the compressor wheel and then VSR balanced to 110,000rpm. Also extrude honed the comp cover and exhaust housing. High temp coated exh housing and comp cover on side that faced the exhaust manifold to help prevent heat soak. If had my time again I would have gone bigger turbo?s. http://300zx.com.au/racecarpage4.htm
impressive did you get a weight of the alloy power steering pump to compare with the iron pump? what is the weight difference?
Unfortunately pritty common. Without hearing Shifters specific reasons, I know Ive seen quite a few cars over the years get a big build only to be sold straight after. I think owners get tired of the stress caused by the car and the money spent after a big build. Wagz is a perfect example. He had one of the best 300s ever, custom widebody, show condition with 700+ rwhp, then sold it. Shame because you rarely get back 1/2 of what went into it.
Cars The journey is the fun part for some. Re pump I have a book that I record most things in about the car like times and weights and comp tests etc but I did not write this one down. From memory is was at least half the weight. I did write things down like the UR alloy alt pulley was 71 grams compaired with stock metal one at 234grams. The coil brackets factory thick over kill metal ones are 71 grams and alloy ones Wizard made for me and 21 grams each.
