Running high boost, not letting turbo cool down after spirited driving will cause premature wearing of the seals. Early stages will not smoke all of the time but will commonly produce a lot of smoke on cold starts or heavy acceleration. When the seal finally cracks/fails will produce constant smoke and often large amounts of it.
