This is a bit of a long shot on a 300ZX site, but how much interest is there in turbo bikes?

There was a bit of talk a while ago on the subjuct and one of my friends (who re-builds bikes) and I are starting to look into the idea. The guy I'm talking about mainly builds bikes for track and road from insurence write-offs. That isn't as bad as it sounds because some insurance write-offs have only fairing damage and an indicator or 2 missing. If there is any serious damage, the parts of the bike - whatever that may be - are replaced, not repaired.

I have no idea on the legality of this for registration, the first few will be only for track use and I would not like to see any sold to people who haven't had a fair bit of experience on track with bikes.

The price has not even come close to being worked out as we have to look into the procedure first for viability, but what do you consider a fair price (example) an excellent 2006 ZXR1000 turbo? I have never seen this kind of thing for sale so don't know what we would be looking at.

In reply to mike456 from other thread:

I don't think there has ever been a factory turbo busa, they are just the most common bikes for the mod as they have a hell of a lot of power from the biggest capacity engine in a common sports bike. The reason for the 1000CC choice is that the bikes are still very powerful but generally more nimble than the bigger bikes (busa, ZXR12, and even the CBRXX Blackbird). Every turbo Hayabusa I have come accross have been for drags/straight line racing.

Repairing bikes that have been crashed is one thing. But adding mods like turbo's is another.

I've done quite a bit of work to my bike, and the time setting it up correctly on the dyno was critical.

With all the new bikes being fuel injected, you'll have to understand the aftermarket bike ecu's and be able to dyno tune them.

The turbo idea is fun, but it does make the bike a bit of a mission to ride. Most of the people who would want a Turbo R1 etc are not likely to have it as there main bike, maybe for drag or stunts. Bikes are normally a person second vehicle, or weekend toy, which cuts you demographic down even further.

    Good fun though.

    Some Help...

Well the only STANDARD turbo bike that has been for sale was a Kawasaki ZX750, back in the 90s...

Busa's and ZX12s... and to a further extent Blackbirds are turbo'd for the simple reason of their slightly longer wheelbase and their functionality to cope with super high speeds (aerodynamics)... Engine's "if done correctly" should have a re-build... but a hayabusa motor for example can easily run a turbo on stock head and bottom end on about 7psi everyday. This would probably net somewhere in the 300+rwhp mark. It obviously needs to be tuned right.. and that's the what it boils down to as well... the tune... and cooling... and I guess how long you want to keep your motor? :)

If you're really interested hop onto a busa forum or ZX12 forum or do some reasearch on the net... rather than on a 300ZX CAR forum...

I cant understand why anyone would want to do this on a street bike, Drag yes..

I have a stock R1 and I have trouble keeping the front wheel down when I flick the wrist... over 7500 rpm..

    And Im a FAT B#^%%$D...

    99 Model

    Maximum power 150 bhp (110.3 kW)@ 10000 rpm
    Maximum Torque 11 kg-m (108.3 Nm) @ 8500 rpm

    Mmmm...

Got throttle control?... :p :p :p But every Yamaha R1 I've ridden does the exact same thing... carby/fuel injected... R1s have a snappy power band... Where as we Suzuki riders have nice progressive power, on a smooth fuel curve...  :D :D

Like I said, these would be restricted to track bikes, the comment about rego was just in case anyone asked... Personally I think most bikes are good enough as is, if this goes ahead I doubt I'll even keep one myself.

To 1TurboStillFun, I'm doing other research as well, just thought I'd throw the idea out there.Your right, what I should have said was I don't know of any current turbo factory bikes... like the last 5 years.

The 'prototype' will most likely be a ZXR10. And all the research into intake, cooling, tuning, etc. is under way, but your suggestions are very helpful, keep them coming.:D

Yamahas are great bikes, but I'm not a fan as such. All the ones I have riden just don't seem to suit me... but that's probably just poor skills!!!:D

The fastest bike in the world now (From Factory) is the Kawasaki NINJA ZX14R.
