Tune up / Dyno tuning

    Okay, even i know these are pretty dumb questions, but i'm really after a straight answer.

    What is a "tune up"?

    If youve got a stock computer, can anything be adjusted during dyno tuning, or is replacing the stock computer the reason you need dyno tuning (so the new cpu can be fiddled with)?

    dyno tuning...

    dyno tuning involves sticking the car on the dyno and adjusting the timing and fuel maps of the ecu to get more power. This can be done on the stock ecu via hardware like zemulator (and some others). However, for the tuning to remain permanent you have to mod your current ecu by taking out the stock chip, putting in a socket in its place, burning a new ROM with the new program and inserting that into the socketed ecu. The other alternative is get to an aftermarket ecu like a microtech, wolf, motec etc....

    so basically, unless your stock ecu is modded, dyno tuning is of no use to you (unless you leave zemulator permanantly connected, but not sure how that works).

    So you can buy blank chips to plug into the socketed ecu?

    Yea basically as Jedi said, you can adjust the fuel maps etc for your car on a dyno then save the changes on your computer. Then get an EPROM burner, burn that code to a blank chip and throw it in your ECU.

    Dynos are also a safe way of monitoring.......

    Dynos are a must if you are "upping" the boost (even with a stock chip) because detonation is noted much easier and AFR's can be monitored (& graphed) in order to safely get the best out of your car.

    If you use any of the a/m fuel controllers these should also be done on the dyno for the same reasons.

    A dyno is handy after any mods to your zed to ascertain if the power increases are real or just perceived. A member at a tech day fitted a chip and was convinced it added "heaps of power" but when put on the dyno found that even though the mid range had increased slightly the outright power had reduced by 15kw at the rear wheels and the AFR's were much richer than even the factory chip.

    Dynos are used for a lot more than just ECU alterations.

    I'm learning something everyday.

    I've been contemplating getting the Z dyno'd over the past few weeks. (when i get her back i mean)


    Firstly, i'm going to upgrade my ecu install .9mm boost jets, customise the intake to my smic's, Clean my Unifilter.

    Then take her to be dyno'd.

    As far as performance mods go. Damn i'm happy with my Z. Not the quickest one round, but more than enough power for a daily Driver.

    Can thoroughly recommend cleaning your Unifilter.

    Did mine a few weeks ago (before going drag-racing), hadn't realised just how dirty and clogged it was. The difference in performance was quite noticeable
