Trying to decide if i should take my car to a interior shop or if there's a way i can do it myself..

In two place the leather material has come off..
1st is on the targa tops are the lock/unlock thing.. its completey loose on both sides.
2nd is in the back of the car on the sides, just below the window also on both sides

I done roof linings and stuff before but i think maybe it needs to be stretched?

Hardest thing is finding a similar patterned vinyl (it's not leather).

You could try removing the targa strips and heating/stretching/gluing them back on or look for 2nd hand replacement via wreckers.

Buy spray-on contact adhesive from craft shop to make repairs neat and lump-free.

The rear wheel arch trim I have never attempted to fix.

spray on stuff is good, but needs a liberal drowning to get it to stick. I used brush on glue, just made sure that the consistency was relatively even. Doesnt have to be 100% uniform, just a lot easier to work with than the spray on stuff, and at a fraction of the cost.

Rear trim areas, besides the seats, are relatively easy to pull. Make sure you get all of the old glue off of the trim backing... will look like fuzzy brown wood dust. Personally found ones of those small "mouse" electric sanders ideal for the job.

Get it right the first time tho, or accept your attempt. Try to remove the cloth or vinyl after youve freshly glued it, even with the glue slightly tacky, and it will tear.

Targa sections.... send the seller in the For Sale Business (maybe Group Buy) section a PM, he did small replacement sections just for the targas at my request. Under $50 delivered.

If you do go ahead with re-trimming yourself, get a good quality (not cheap) "brush on glue" if you use any sort of spray on glue it will not hold or last and will look worse! and will need to be stretched and "man handled" quickly and precisely because she will stick quickly!

Im with K-zed, try and re-use the original vinyl, try using heat and re-glue....but usually the vinyl is stiff and is usually the reason its coming off, you can buy quite nice soft vinyl these days, I doubt it would be that noticeable that its a different pattern.

    Good luck....Cam

What rubbish. Get a good quality glue full stop. There are lots of useless glues out there. Some are spray on, some are brush on, some are good, some are bad.

Get friendly with your local upholsterer. He will tell you what to use, or even better get it for you.

I've been using 3M Super 74. About $25 for a 475g spray bottle. Fantastic stuff. You spray both surfaces, wait 30 seconds and start attaching the material. Start in the middle and work out from there. Sticks perfectly, but still gives you the chance to pull the material off and reseat.

(But, the stuff I've bought in the shops has been less than good)

if you need a good upholsterer go see either Gary Bowen or Gary Forester, they both do all the jobs on the cars at my work. Forester does a wicked job on custom leather jobs on the brand new cars and he also does a fair few high profile summernats cars. both are in Flinders estate South Nowra.

yeah thats correct, there is a reason why industries don't use the quick, clean easy to use spray on stuff....(last time i saw the interior of a lambo dash being wrapped i dont remember seeing them standing there shaking a can and spraying it all up!) Im sorry its just not as good. i might be wrong and the stuff you said might be good for this application, but in my experience of spray glues they just dont stick! I have worked in and around trades of all my life and have worked using "only" brush on glues!

It just ticked me off when you said "thats rubbish", if you want to voice your opinion then do so, dont cut down on others opinions! thats my experience and thats my advice!

LOL yeah that will be enough on high. It will just take longer to get the vinyl to relax and become pliable. As your doing it keep running your hand across the area to make sure you dont get it too hot! otherwise you may burn a hot sport or worse a hole

I got my replacements off ebay - was a great match - the seller "caroline" (sorry - thats all I can remember - but she should be easy to find) was really helpful in matching the type and colour (was u.s. based) - I asked her to give me excess of 1" so that I could stretch it over without too much trouble, but you have to trim back to about 20mm around the locks, as anymore will make it hard to set the locks back in for a perfect fit

tried 3m spray on - waste of time
used 3m brushed on glue - selleys - worked great
